Viola’s Hawaiian name Kalanikauleleiawi, Kaohelelani and Kapiolani were those of Hawaii’s most powerful female chiefs with the exception of Kaohelelani who was only a minor figure. Kalanikauleleiawi was the great-grandmother of Kamehameha the Great and Kalokuokamaile the Great. She was co-ruler of the Big Island of Hawaii along with his own brother and husband Keaweikekahialiiokamoku. Kaohelelani was daughter of Kalokuokamaile and Kaloiokalani which is the same name as one of her first cousin's and is popular among Theresa Owana Laanui's descendants. The name Kapiolani was either the High Chiefess Kapiolani of Hilo who defied the goddess Pele or Esther Kapiolani, Queen of Hawaii.
She married first, Richard Shaw and they later divorced and she remarried to Ronald Montague Madeiros. It is unclear if she has any issues or if she is still alive today since most of her sibling had already died.
