Vinton County is a county located in the state of Ohio, United States. As of the 2000 census, the population is 12,806, the least populous in the state. Its county seat is McArthur[2] and is named for Samuel Finley Vinton, a Nineteenth Century congressman from Ohio.[3]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 415 square miles (1,075 km²).414 square miles (1,072 km²) of it is land and 1 square miles (2 km²) of it (0.21%) is water.

Vinton County has a wealth of public lands. An area of the Wayne National Forest is located in the center of the county. Three state forests are partly in the county: Zaleski State Forest, Tar Hollow State Forest, and Richland Furnace State Forest. The county features two state parks: Lake Hope State Park and Lake Alma State Park. There are two state wildlife areas in the county: Wellston State Wildlife Area and Turkey Ridge State Wildlife Area. In addition, the state holds a conservation easement on the 16,000-acre Raccoon Ecological Management Area (REMA).

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 12,806 people, 4,892 households, and 3,551 families residing in the county. The population density was 31 people per square mile (12/km²). There were 5,653 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.08% White, 0.35% Black or African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.08% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 0.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 4,892 households out of which 34.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% were married couples living together, 10.20% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% were non-families. 23.60% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.40% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.04.

In the county, the population was spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.80% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 23.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.10% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,465, and the median income for a family was $34,371. Males had a median income of $30,936 versus $21,257 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,731. About 15.10% of families and 20.00% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.60% of those under age 18 and 13.50% of those age 65 or over. Vinton County is the poorest county in the state of Ohio.
