Vinson & Elkins LLP (or V&E) is an international law firm with offices in Houston (headquarters), Dallas, Austin, Beijing, Shanghai, London, Tokyo, New York City, Washington, D.C., Moscow, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Hong Kong. With annual revenues of over 500 million dollars and more than 700 attorneys, it is one of the largest law firms in the United States and is ranked 63rd in the 2008 Vault guide to The Top 100 Most Prestigious Firms. The firm is currently led by Houston managing partner Joe Dilg.
The firm was started in Houston, Texas in 1917 by James A. Elkins and William A. Vinson.[1] The firm is known for its energy industry expertise. However, in recent years, it has also been recognized as a leader in many other practices including public finance, infrastructure development, international transactions, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, regulatory matters, professional liability, intellectual property, and complex commercial litigation. Outside of the law, Vinson & Elkins has also been recognized for its community involvement and support for the arts.
Among others, Vinson & Elkins represented the failed energy company Enron prior to the company's collapse in 2001. This led to a number of lawsuits against Vinson & Elkins and others by former Enron employees and shareholders. After nearly five years of legal battles, Vinson & Elkins was dismissed in January 2007 from the last significant litigation related to the Enron collapse.
Currently, the firm represents former Congressman Bob Ney in connection with the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.
