Vindafjord is a municipality in the county of Rogaland, Norway.
Vindafjord was established as a new municipality January 1, 1965 - after the merger of the municipalities of Sandeid and Vats - and large parts of Imsland, Skjold and Vikedal. It was further significantly enlarged from January 1, 2006 - when it merged with the neighboring municipality of Ølen. (Which was transferred from Hordaland county to Rogaland county.)
[edit] The name
The municipality (created in 1965) are named after the fjord Vindafjorden. The first element is probably derived from the verb vinda 'turn, twist' - referring to the sharp turn of the fjord at Dragneset.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is a recent mix from 2006: The figure is taken from the old coat-of-arms of Ølen, the colurs from the old of Vindafjord.
