Village Academy Schools, are a private preschool, lower, middle, and high school in Powell, Ohio. It is a nonsectarian, independent, co-ed, college preparatory school. There are three campus located in Powell and Dublin, Ohio. All campuses welcome students and families who have commitment to a well-rounded, rigorous program in a multicultural learning environment. The curriculum is challenging to all students including the academically gifted and artistically talented.[citation needed]

Village Academy Schools were founded under the Learning Unlimited International Schools system in the fall of 1976 as a year-round preschool and kindergarten. The original campus was established adjacent to the Ohio State University. Over the next thirty years, the program expanded to become an independent preparatory school for students in grades preschool through twelve. In 2006, the school was rebranded simply as Village Academy Schools which consist of Village Academy, Village Junior Academy and Village Muirfield.

In the fall of 1990, the first phase of a seven-acre campus, Village Academy, opened in Powell, Ohio. Over the course of the last decade, Village Academy has emerged as one of the top private, independent school systems in northwest Columbus and within the Columbus metropolitan area.[citation needed]

[edit] Sports

Athletic opportunities are varied and numerous at Village Academy. Participation in sports and physical education is an integral part of the curriculum. The athletic teams are comprised of students with a wide range of abilities, enabling the developing athlete, as well as the skilled athlete, to compete side by side. Village Academy is a member of the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association). Both individual and team sports are offered, including: soccer, tennis, basketball, volleyball, golf, cheerleading, and videogame tournaments. Athletic programs are available for lower, middle and upper school students. Village Academy's mascot is the Griffin.

[edit] Extracurricular opportunities

A variety of extracurricular opportunities are available for students at Village Academy.

Lower School Activities: Lower School students may choose "after school specials" such as chess, cookery, art, hands-on science, computer skills, dance, yoga, cheerleading and theater. Children are introduced to many of life's experience which cannot be brought into the classroom. Historically, end of the year activities for lower school include trips to the Newport Aquarium and Camp Mary Orton. All lower school students also participate in a winter musical, a spring production, and other activities such as the science and language fairs, spelling, math and geography bees. Also, boy scouts and girl scouts.

Middle and Upper School Activities: Middle and Upper school students enjoy a wealth of opportunities for social gatherings, dances, and club activities as well as trips to theater events, museum exhibitions and musical concerts. Eighth grade students travel to Washington D.C. and seniors plan a trip abroad or to interesting and educational destinations in the U.S. Overnight trips to adventure camps, physics days at local amusement parks, laboratory research at Stone Lab on Lake Erie are just a few of the exciting opportunities awaiting students.

Middle School students also participate in geography bees, spelling bees, and vocabulary bees.

[edit] The Arts

The newest addition to the Village Academy facility is the recently built Arts Conservatory. The Arts Conservatory, a 12,000 square foot structure, opened in 2003 and incorporates antique barn-like features that represent the architectural history of the Village of Powell, Ohio. The floor plan included rehearsal areas for instrumental and vocal music programs, as well as individual practice rooms. The facility has dance, drama, recording studios, art gallery, a block box theater, visual arts studio complete with kiln room, photography, graphics arts lab and a woodshop. The Arts Conservatory allows students to master develop their skills in a variety of areas including: music, dance, art, theater, and media technology.

The Village Academy Jazz Band has performed with Arnett Howard, Mark Frye, Gene Walker, and Lee Savory, in addition to a number of performances at several locations in both Ohio and Florida.

The Village Academy drama department has also been recognized for a number of its productions including: Oliver!, The Foreigner, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, Cinderella, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and The Crucible.
