Villa Bisonó

Villa Bisonó is a small municipality in the Dominican Republic northwestern section, created in 1956. It lies approximately 20 miles (32 km) from Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic's second largest city. The town serves as a junction for the highways DR-1 and DR-5.
In 2002, the municipality of Villa Bisonó had a total population of 42,210 p., of which 12,487 lived in the rural area. The city had a population of 29,723 p.
The small town of Navarrete, birthplace of the former president Joaquín Balaguer, was elevated as a small section of Santiago municipality in 1939. When Villa Bisonó was founded, Navarrete became a paraje, but later recovered its original status.
Currently Villa Bisonó has 7 rural sections and 47 parajes. Rural sections are Cañada Bonita, Mejía de Navarrete, Villa Heneken or Pontoncito, Villa Nueva, Estancia del Yaque, La Lomota, and Vuelta Larga.
