Vila Real de Santo António (pron. IPA['vilɐ ʁi'aɫ dɨ 'sɐ̃tu ɐ̃'tɔnju], often pronounced as ['vilɐ ʁi'aɫ dɨ sɐ̃tɐ̃'tɔnju]) is both a municipality and a city in the Algarve, Portugal. The area of the municipality is 57,53 km² and the population was 17, 956 inhabitants (2001). It is one of the few municipalities in Portugal without territorial continuity (the others being Oliveira de Frades and Montijo): its territory comprehends two parts, with the municipal seat located in the Eastern part. Vila Real de Santo António was destroyed by a tsunami, caused by the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, and largely rebuilt in 1774.

The town is located next to the Guadiana river and before the building of the Guadiana International Bridge used to be the easiest way to access Portugal from Andalusia (by car via ferry). Its trade has steadily diminished since then.

[edit] Parishes

The municipality is made of three parishes (portuguese, "freguesias"):

  • Monte Gordo
  • Vila Nova da Cacela (located in the Western part)
  • Vila Real de Santo António
