[edit] Name
The municipality is named after the three large islands of Indre Vikna, Mellomvikna and Ytre Vikna (Old Norse Vikn). The name is derived from the word vík f 'inlet'. (The islands are scored by numerous inlets.)
[edit] Geography
The municipality consists of a large island archipelago with some 6,000 large and small islands going far into the Norwegian sea off the northwestern coast of Nord-Trøndelag. Vikna is the largest spawning area for cod south of Lofoten. The three largest islands are: Indre Vikna, closest to the mainland, Mellomvikna and then Ytre Vikna as the westernmost island. The main town is Rørvik, located on the eastern shore of Indre Vikna, facing the mainland across the Nærøysundet strait. In 1963 the coastal steamer (Hurtigruten) St Svithun run aground on Nordøyan and was lost.
[edit] Economy
Fishing, fish farming, public service and agriculture are the main sources of income. The Norveg museum, devoted to the coastal way of life through the centuries, is located in Rørvik. Hurtigruten calls at Rørvik, and there is road connection by way of the Nærøysund Bridge east to the mainland and the E6. There is also a small airport at Ryum, near Rørvik.
[edit] Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from 1988. It shows three salmons.
