Location of Viera, Florida

Situated on former Duda Ranch and scrub forest land, Viera is a master planned community in Brevard County, Florida, located in the Space Coast region. It is unincorporated.[1] Viera is home to many of the county government's buildings. It also contains the Space Coast Stadium, home field for the Brevard County Manatees, former spring training home to the Florida Marlins. It is now the spring training home of the Washington Nationals who were known as the Montreal Expos until 2005. The population of Viera (as of 2000) is approximately 19,083. [2]

Viera wetlands contain wildlife. The wetlands are open to the public for photographs.

A large "lifestyle center" called The Avenue Viera [3] opened in 2004. The grand opening was delayed somewhat due to Hurricanes Frances and Jean [4] The Avenue contains shops and restaurants, a 16-screen Rave movie complex[5], and several "Big-Box" retailers including Bed, Bath and Beyond, Office Depot and The Sports Authority.

There are two 18-hole championship golf courses in Viera, a regional park, and one movie theater.

Neighborhoods include Gatwick Manor[6], and The Villages of Viera East[7] which consists of the Bennington, Somerville, Templeton, Auburn Lakes and Wingate Estates subdivisions, surrounding the Ralph M. Williams, Jr. Elementary School and adjacent Clubhouse Park. It is located directly across from the Viera East Golf Club[8]

Public Safety

Brevard County Station #47 is located in Viera and is called upon often to respond to vehicle accidents on nearby I-95. It also houses a Special Response Truck that responds to hazmat incidents county-wide[10]

Recreation

The 125-acre Viera Regional Park has 5 lit baseball fields, 2 lit softball fields, 8 soccer fields, an 18,000 square feet community center/gymnasium, 2 lit outdoor basketball courts, 3 playgrounds, 2 pavilions, a 4-bay maintenance facility, two 2-Story restroom/concession/meeting room , a pedway, and 4 lit tennis courts.

The park opened in 2006; the community center in 2007.

A new overpass crossing I-95 in central Viera opened in November 2007, joining Viera East and Viera West via an extension of Viera Boulevard. This has significantly reduced travel time to the government offices, stadium complex, The Avenue retail shops and restaurant area, and new residential development in Viera West.[11]
