Vienna is a city in Wood County, West Virginia, along the Ohio River. It is a suburb of Parkersburg. The population was 10,861 at the 2000 census. It is the third largest city by population in the Parkersburg-Marietta-Vienna Metropolitan Statistical Area. Vienna was incorporated in 1935, and was named for the town of Vienna, Virginia.[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.7 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 10,861 people, 4,733 households, and 3,152 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,895.8 people per square mile (1,118.3/km²). There were 5,074 housing units at an average density of 1,352.8/sq mi (522.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.70% White, 0.95% African American, 0.17% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.50% of the population.

There were 4,733 households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.84.

In the city the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.5 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $39,220, and the median income for a family was $49,477. Males had a median income of $41,779 versus $25,122 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,452. About 5.3% of families and 7.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 7.6% of those age 65 or over.

Vienna is home to Jackson Junior High School, a West Virginia and National Blue Ribbon School. Jackson is regarded as one of the best jr. high schools in the state of West Virginia. Its feeder schools are Greenmont, Vienna, and Neale Elementary Schools.
