Vidarbha Rajya Party

Vidarba Rajya Party (Vidarba State Party), political party in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The party works for the formation of a separate Vidarbha state in eastern Maharashtra. The party leader is Banwarilal Purohit. In the 2004 Lok Sabha elections Banwarilal Purohit stood as a candidate in Nagpur and got 27 928 votes (3,52%). Except Purohit, Keshaorao Shende stood as a VRP candidate in Ramtek, and got 9 046 votes (1,4%). Mr. Banwarilal Purohit is also the editor of a Newspaper called The Hitavada, which claims to be the largest read English daily in Nagpur. He assisted by people like Mr. Dattu Thethe, a former BJP worker. Most of the people in VRP are former BJP members who are disillusioned with petty caste and region politics. Purohit has earlier been a member of All India Forward Bloc, Indian National Congress and BJP.
