Talk:Vid

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a set of arguments against the disambiguity of the ancient root vid. When discussing archaic roots it is completely reasonable for long standing place names, such as Vid, an archaeological site in Croatia and Vid, a legendary river in Norse mythology to be included in the primary definition.

The issue of continuity is most important in developing clear understanding of the real meaning of such roots. In the case of vid, "related to veda" takes us clearly back to the root "VID". See: http://veda.harekrsna.cz/encyclopedia/vedas-purpose-origin.htm

The relationship to "video" is not accurate because it ignores the ancient Greek and Latin "video" both of which directly related to "knowing" and not literally "seeing".

Jumping all the way from Sanskrit to 20th Century English is unreasonable when there are continuous phylogenetic data that shows "vida" has always existed in Danish and describes "knowing".

I would certainly agree that modern Groupo Editorial Vid, the acronym VID for Voltage Identification and Vid TV, the Russian television company have nothing to do with the definition of vid and should be put in another area.

I suggest that you back up to the earlier definition of vid and review more carefully before allowing this disambiguation to continue Bobkiger 00:35, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Bob Kiger
