A general election for the 57th Parliament of Victoria is expected to take place, barring exceptional circumstances, on Saturday, 27 November 2010, in line with the fixed term provisions laid out in the Electoral Act 2002.[1] Victorians registered to vote will be asked to elect members to single-member Legislative Assembly electorates under a full preferential voting system and multi-member Legislative Council electorates under a proportional representation system.[1] The election will be run by the independent Victorian Electoral Commission.

Terms are presently fixed at four years. The following key dates for the election are anticipated[2]:
- Monday 2 November 2010: Dissolution of the 56th Parliament and writs for the election lodged
- Monday 9 November 2010: Close of rolls, voters have until 8pm to enrol to vote.
- Wednesday 11 November 2010: Close of nominations for party candidates
- Thursday 12 November 2010: Close of nominations for independents
- Saturday 27 November 2010: Election day
