Victoria (Roman usurper)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Victoria, also known as Vitruvia, was a usurper against Roman Emperor Aurelianus, according to Historia Augusta, which includes her into the list of the Thirty Tyrants.

The only source for Victoria's life (and even her existence) is the Historia Augusta list of the Thirty Tyrants. According to this often unreliable source, Victoria was the mother of the usurper Victorinus and grandmother of usurper Victorinus Junior, who were killed by their own soldiers. She supported and promoted Tetricus I's rebellion, and adopted the title of Mater castrorum, "Mother of the barracks", adopted by the Roman Empresses after Faustina the Younger. Always according to Historia, she even minted coins in her name. She died soon after Tetricus' accession, either killed by the soldiers, or of natural causes.
