[edit] History
Michelle Fowler became pregnant with Vicki in 1985, when she was just sixteen years old. Michelle chose not to have an abortion and refused to name the baby's father. Vicki was born in 1986, and before her birth it had been revealed that she was the daughter of Den Watts, the married father of Michelle's best friend, Sharon. Den assumed that Michelle had named their daughter after The Queen Vic public house, where she had been conceived, but Michelle revealed that she chose Victoria because her grandfather was called Albert (as in Queen Victoria and Prince Albert). Den was allowed to hold his daughter for one minute on the day she was born, and then he and Michelle decided it was best for him to never come near them again, in case anyone discovered the truth. Den provided for his daughter in secret, whilst Michelle raised Vicki as a single parent. Den was heartbroken to have little else to do with Vicki, and he was kept at bay by both Michelle and her mother Pauline.
For a while, Michelle's husband Lofty Holloway was a surrogate father to Vicki and even considered adopting her, which Den was against. Den tried to manipulate both Michelle and Lofty to split up, which they eventually did in 1988 after Michelle aborted Lofty's unborn child. Lofty left Walford after confessing (to a smirking Den) that he never really cared for Vicki. Den continued to provide for his child, and even bought a flat for Michelle, Vicki and Sharon in 1988; however, Den's involvement in Vicki's life abruptly ended in February 1989, when a criminal organisation known as The Firm attempted to kill him. With Den presumed dead, Vicki grew up with various different men acting as her stepfather.
In 1989, Vicki contracted meningitis and nearly died after Dr. Harold Legg failed to diagnose her condition, but to her family's relief, she survived. When Vicki was seven years old, she was kidnapped from outside her school, leaving Michelle frantic with worry. A national police operation eventually found Vicki in the clutches of a mad old woman named Audrey Whittingham and to everyone's relief Vicki was reunited with her mother. Vicki remained in Walford until she was nine years old, but in October 1995, Michelle acquired a new job in America and she and Vicki moved away.
[edit] Return to Walford
She eventually returned to Walford in February 2003 when she ran away from home. Vicki had been rowing regularly with her mother and it was eventually decided that she could stay in Walford living with her grandmother Pauline. However, Pauline's nagging proved too much for her and so she went to live with her half sister, Sharon Watts, who was adopted by Vicki's father, Den. Vicki was quite manipulative and mischievous at first and nearly managed to get herself arrested when she and her uncle, Martin, broke into the minute-mart to steal alcohol. However, Vicki had her older sister wrapped around her finger, so she never remained in trouble for long.
It was Vicki who discovered that Den had fathered a third child, Dennis Rickman, and was overjoyed when she tracked him down and persuaded her new found brother to move to Walford.
Vicki enrolled at fashion college for a short time, and even started her own clothing business, selling tie-dye t-shirts on Kareena Ferreira's market stall. However, Vicki had a short attention span, and she soon grew bored of the responsibility her new employment entailed, so the job didn't last long. Later Sharon employed her as the cloak room attendant at her nightclub, Angie's Den.
During her time on the show, Vicki became pregnant by Spencer Moon after a one night stand, but chose to abort the baby. This decision didn't sit well with Sharon, and she desperately tried to make her change her mind. Sharon had been left infertile after she herself had an abortion, and so she offered Vicki £10,000 to have the baby so she could bring it up as her own. Spencer had also decided that he wanted to be a father and so Vicki was feeling intense pressure from everyone. After divulging her feelings to her brother, he arranged for an appointment at the abortion clinic and she went ahead with the termination behind their backs. Spencer found it hard to forgive Vicki after this and their friendship was sorely tested.
Later that year, Vicki was overjoyed to find out from her brother, that her father, who she thought had been killed 14 years ago, was alive and well and living in Spain. Sharon refused to entertain this notion, and so Vicki left Walford in search of her father and brought him back to the Square to reunite with his family.
Vicki's father brought a whole heap of problems with him and his vendetta against the Mitchell's, which Dennis had started, led to Vicki nearly being burnt alive when the family club Angie's Den was torched by Billy Mitchell, while she was inside. Luckily Vicki was rescued by Billy before coming to any serious harm.
Vicki was horrified to discover that Sharon and Dennis had started a romantic relationship. Even though Sharon was not biologically related to Dennis, Vicki still couldn't accept it and rebelled by dating Ash Ferreira for a while. This soon ended when he twigged that she was only using him to get at her siblings. Eventually Vicki's and Den's objections took their toll on Sharon and Dennis and they ended their relationship.
In 2004, Vicki started a relationship with her college lecturer, Tommy Grant who was 46 years old - 28 years her senior. Her family were outraged, particularly her stepmother Chrissie Watts. Tommy feigned love for Vicki, and there was even talk about them both leaving Walford to go travelling together. Chrissie knew that Tommy couldn't be trusted and so she set about seducing him, with the hope that he would respond and show his true colours. Tommy took the bait and after a brief kiss, Chrissie stripped him naked in the toilets of The Queen Vic, on the promise that she would soon join him. However, she stole his clothes and then forced Vicki to see him for the lying cheat that he was. Vicki was humiliated, devastated and furious with Chrissie, but she eventually came to realise that she had her best interests at heart.
Vicki's final appearance was on Christmas Day 2004. During a family meal, Sharon and Dennis revealed that they had resumed their romantic relationship, only for Dennis's former girlfriend Zoe Slater to announce that she was pregnant. Sharon then decided to go to America alone, as Dennis had been persuaded to stay in Walford with Zoe. Den went to talk to Sharon alone, trying to persuade her to stay in Walford. During the conversation, he revealed he didn't love Vicki nearly as much as he did Sharon. However, a devastated Vicki overheard this and decided that she couldn't remain living with a father who didn't love her as much as her sister. She then decided to return to her mum in America. She has not appeared since.
Her father was murdered two months later (although his body remained undiscovered for six months) and she didn't attend his funeral. Nor did she attend the funeral of Dennis (who was stabbed to death) in January 2006. She missed a third family funeral 12 months later following the death of her grandmother, Pauline Fowler.
[edit] Trivia
Trivia sections are discouraged under Wikipedia guidelines. The article could be improved by integrating relevant items and removing inappropriate ones. |
- Vicki's abduction storyline in 1993 had to be delayed because the original date of the storyline coincided with the funeral of murdered Liverpool toddler James Bulger.
- When Vicki returned in 2003 she was given an American accent to signify her time living in the country. However, the British press ridiculed it as unconvincing. Vicki then went back to America briefly and upon her return, she had miraculously lost her American accent and replaced it with a cockney one. The only explanation of this was her briefly saying that she wanted "to fit in".
- Vicki's name was spelled (or credited as) "Vicky" between 1987 and 1995. When the character returned in 2003, her name was spelled "Vicki".
