Your recent edit puzzles me a bit. It was a good idea to add another hook for the main page balance, but replace the image...? The image I've uploaded does not have any problem, does it? --BorgQueen (talk) 16:51, 3 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] RE:Next updates of DYK
Just browsing through the Scottish noms, seeing most of 'em are mine just now. Is it frowned up for self-nominators to drop their own noms into next update? BTW, the Bernard nom is particularly appropriate because Tartan Day commemorates the Declaration of Arbroath, of which Bernard is supposedly the author (in popular writings, though actual historians these days don't believe that). As for the imagemap thing, it could be interesting, yet since I'm sure most people havne't seen it before, I'd say bring it up on the talk page to see what we should do in the future. --Wizardman 15:48, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, now I see what you mean. Not sure then. Wizardman 16:36, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Bad luck about the imagemap Vic. I was going to promote it myself, but someone had already promoted a pic hook and I figured it could wait until next time. Unfortunately, it seems Wizardman was not familiar with the concept and just promoted the image instead.
Maybe next time you should leave a message so that updaters not familiar with imagemaps will understand what they are and why they add interest to the page. Gatoclass (talk) 17:00, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks Vic appreciate the comments. When I first saw the imagemap I was a bit confused but since it was put there by an experienced user, and I've seen the imagemap on your user page, I figured you knew what you were doing. I actually did two updates last night but on both occasions someone beat me to the image slot, otherwise your image would have gone into one of them. I figured I would just feature it today if someone else didn't get there before me, but sadly that turned out to be someone who didn't know what an imagemap is. Next time, I'll be sure to give precedence to an imagemap, all other things being equal, to try and ensure that doesn't happen again. Gatoclass (talk) 17:24, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
-
- Hi there. I really feel sorry about the image too (you had put your time and effort in it/and I found it an interesting image setup as well), because as you can see here (the "i" symbol was there), I left your image, numbers and settings fully intact. And I was very careful from the start, from the time I copied it from the suggestions page up to the point when I transferred/saved it to the next update page. Well, perhaps I should have reverted Wizardman's edit when he/she removed the numbers. I assumed that what he/she did (the removal of the numbers for the image) was the norm, since he/she is more experienced than I am in DYK updates. - DaughterofSun (talk) 17:42, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Committed identity hash
I urge you to create a committed identity like I have on my user page. It's designed to aid in the case of your account being compromised. Here's a good one that I used. SHA-512 is a good idea since the high number of bits and repetitions in the algorithm makes it nearly impossible to calculate backwards. It's a good thing for all admins. There have been some problems. The hash is a way for you to reclaim your account if it gets compromised. Royalbroil 03:13, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Bombardment of Brussels
Vic, what did you do with this one? I can see you took it from the suggestions page but it hasn't turned up in the next update page yet. I was going to use it as the lead for the next update, if that's okay with you. Gatoclass (talk) 15:13, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
- No problem, I just thought maybe you'd been called away in the middle of the transfer or something :)
- I'll leave this one to you then if you like, as I did the last couple of updates already. Gatoclass (talk) 15:24, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
I know how the DYK system works. Just in the mess of the uncited hook and the formatting mess I left in trying to fix it and propose alternative hooks and images, I thought there might have been some confusion. The hook which was put up was actually none of the 3 I proposed but a portion of the last one. This doesn't bother me, I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't just because of the mess I left. I put my comment where I knew it would be easily seen, dealt with one way or another, and deleted. I know the update group works hard so I wanted to keep it visible and simple. -Oreo Priest talk 19:37, 30 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello. Just a quick question, could you or someone else please check these two articles (spelling, wiki, etc.). In fact, there is also a third one Where Has Love Gone?, but it still requires a major expansion. I am trying to make them good, and who knows, may be featured on wiki as such. [edit] Arleston merge
It was not my intention to offend by executing the merger of Arleston into Sinfin; I did not believe that it would be controversial. There is no requirement to always propose a merger, as stated in WP:MERGE: "Merging is a normal editing action, something any editor can do, and as such does not need to be proposed and processed. If you think merging something improves the encyclopedia, you can be bold and perform the merge, as described below. Because of this, it makes little sense to object to a merge purely on procedural grounds, e.g. "you cannot do that without discussion" is not a good argument." There is also no requirement to move ALL the text from one article to another, only as much as makes the new article "flow".
However, as you believe that the merge is controversial, I will revert the action and propose the merger instead. From your response, it may well be that the consensus is against it. Regards. -- MightyWarrior (talk) 17:09, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

I've added stuff from Pevsner about the church and manor, but it'll need integrating into the article, particularly the bit about the manor' s dates. I left the red link to Grandisson in, because I think the one referred to is Lord de Grandisson rather than his son Bishop G.- although Lord de G. doesn't have a page the link with the G. family is interesting because Bish. G. built Exeter cathedral and Ottery St Mary church- suggests there may be a G. link with this church. Also Robert the Bruce makes an appearance. I'm going to try find some stuff about George Eliot's connection this evening after work.Ning-ning (talk) 08:06, 20 May 2008 (UTC)

meaning that it is a area represented by it's own council or "comittee" representing the principal urban zone, as apposed to the district council that represents all the other urban areas within Bolsover District. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Redpathanderson (talk • contribs) 17:34, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Some more DYK (a bit "sexed up")
That the Great East Window of Norbury Church contained priceless medieval stained glass, which was still there when the window was bricked up in 1770, and not there when the window was unbricked in 1842.
That Norbury is the birthplace of Ann Pegg, who earned £240 (£14,000 in today’s money) by lying in bed entertaining strangers.
That George Eliot was inspired throughout her life by a bush growing outside her father’s workshop.
That Norbury Church contains a memorial to the lewd and vile wife of the 13th Lord; she is tied up in a shroud with a comment on her behaviour carved above her head.
That the name of the patron saint of Norbury means Fair-headed Barr of the Marshy Place.
Hi Victuallers

The source is page 13 of The Ancient Parish of Norbury by the Rev, L.J. Bowyer, Rector of Norbury and Vicar of Snelston, published J.B. Henstock, Ashbounre, 1953- he refers to her as Ann Pegg, gives details of her liasons etc. Ning-ning (talk) 09:54, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ralph Fitzherbert
Hi Victuallers,
That's great! Excellent article. I haven't got anything as yet to add- a possibility is if he was an active "Ricardian" then there may be some mention of him in studies done on Richard III. I'm unsure now as to the Finnbar- Barlock link, as the Cornish church is called St Fimbarrus and never appears to have had "lock" or similar in the name. Also the source (Bowyer) appears to be wrong in stating that he was called Lochan because he dwelt by a loch. The source for Ann Moore's birth in Norbury is article 17 of Derbyshire Oddities; I haven't come across a copy yet. I'm wondering whether somebody misread Roston for Rosliston. Hoping to go to Norbury on Monday. Ning-ning (talk) 15:44, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

I hope to be able to get actual pictures by some time in August, but that is dependant on many factors. Loggie (talk) 20:24, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi - there is an issue with this nomination which you may like to address. The hook is not properly cited, and a citation within the image is not working (can be fixed simply I'm sure). Hi Victuallers - the articles are fine, except the hook, which must be changed as I can't find any direct reference to the distinct phenom of deforestation in the sources nor the articles, neither does it tell me that it applies to all of Staffordshire and not simply the Needwood Forest. The sources use the term "enclosure," which should be used and described in the nom. Vishnava talk 19:34, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Hi - first of all, I'm just giving a helping hand by reviewing the noms to make sure they fit the criteria - there is no need to do as I wish - its just to discuss this. I realize I maybe nitpicking, but I think its a matter of accuracy because "deforestation" is general, and it wasn't clear what "inspired" Seward and Darwin, from the sources and the article itself. Thereby I questioned the accuracy of the hook, rightly or wrongly. Vishnava talk 20:39, 2 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes I appreciate your reasoning. You have plenty more experience in DYK and I will use your guidance. Its probably my inexperience but I realize that I'm nitpicking and not concentrating on the basic evaluation of the verification of facts. Thanks for keeping me grounded, Vishnava talk 13:22, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Hook line
Hi Victuallers - I created a new article on Neil Hamilton Fairley from an existing stub on 3 June and wanted to put it in DYK but I can't think of a hook line... can you help? Hawkeye7 (talk) 08:36, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] 6/5 DYK
--Bedford Pray 01:33, 5 June 2008 (UTC)
- I confess to being a little mystified why your colourful image of Francis Mundy was overlooked in favour of a grainy black-and-white image of Hugh Largy. I must also wonder why your much more interesting articles on said subjects were not chosen to lead over the ho-hum topic of Largy's political career. The painting of Needwood Forest would have made a very nice lead too. There's no accounting for taste I guess! Gatoclass (talk) 06:39, 5 June 2008 (UTC)

- I guess the reason it bugged me a bit is that your double nom got overlooked not just once, but over the course of several updates, and mostly for inferior pics/articles in my view. I kept thinking it would be the next to go but it just didn't happen. Unfortunately I've been busy writing articles myself over the last few days, and been beaten to the next update page by other users, or I would have ensured it got the top spot myself. These things happen.
[edit] RE Harry Peckham
1774 English cricket season doesn't seem to suggest he played (then at least) and no other cricket seasons seem to mention him that I can find. I'm just downloading a couple of public domain books with him mentioned to see what it says. SGGH speak! 19:16, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
-
- The above doesn't have any sources I can find on playing. The Times may have something in their on-line archive (goes back that far) but am nose deep in exam revision so can't really get there until Wednesday evening sometime. Will let you know regarding both articles. SGGH speak! 20:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] The Hotchkiss School
Hey, just wanted to let you know that I pumped The Hotchkiss School from Top to High in importance, at least until there are some more references to prove otherwise. ;) Please see Talk:The Hotchkiss School#Sources: Citations. — Calebrw (talk) 01:57, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- I left it at B as that was where it already was, so I didn't assess in that way, just in importance. I will try to take a closer look at today if possible. — Calebrw (talk) 13:59, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
- (Start/High) I saw your reassessment and I agree with it. I marked many places for additional citations. withing the Article. — Calebrw (talk) 19:07, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Expanding Mr.Peckham
Hi Victuallers, thanks for the offer- if I find anything on Mr. P I'll pass it on to you for storage, so you can do the required 5-fold expansion - I'm trudging my way through Nottinghamshire windmills at the moment Ning-ning (talk) 19:06, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Plagarism removed from Shawnigan Lake School article.
Please see talk page of Shawnigan Lake School. I discovered that the History section was a near word-for-word plagiarism of http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/cgi-bin/text2html/finding/government/.ms_finding//MS-1485.txt and this needs to cited correctly. It is cited in-text once, but that is it.
I discovered this during a requested assessment of this article. The rest looks good. — Calebrw (talk) 21:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
