Victor Han 韩诚忠
I was born in a small village and listened to the Pingshu, Romance of the Three Kingdoms when I was five. Since then I have sought advice and inspiration from the story and it has become one of my spiritual backbones.

Death and life rest upon fate; wealth and rank lie with heaven.

There has never been any saviour of the world,
Nor deities, nor emperors on which to depend.

We must entirely depend on ourselves!

My wife and I are both educated. We were practically at the same university from 2001 to 2004. She majored in medicine whereas I was doing my master's in linguistics. We had been together for 5 years before we got married. Both of us consider marriage as a lifetime commitment.

My grandfather received some elementary education, but my grandmother was illiterate even unable to write her own name. He was sent to the city center to learn trade or something. Exposed to more "civilized" city life, he acquired much knowledge. By comparison, although she was fortunate enough not to have her feet bound, she might have stayed in her small village until her later life as a grandma. Therefore, to their four children, especially to my aunts, he was admired as all source of knowledge, while she was considered a good wife and mother.

My parents grew up during the Great Cultural Revolution. Because my grandfather was labeled as the son of a landlord, his son, my father, was forced out of school. Although my mother's family was not labeled as landlord but rich farmers, she had the same fate as my father in terms of education. Both of them only received four years of elementary education.

Me and my brother grew up in the 1980s, when education was not considered as important as it is today. That might be the reason why my brother dropped out of school at the age of 15. No one thought it a big deal to drop out at that time. After all, the 600-year-old village had never witnessed a real university student. Furthermore, the late 1980s witnessed many successful illiterates who became wealthy overnight and not a small number of college graduates had to work for these people. It seemed to my village folks that college education was useless in terms of individuals' economic development. In such a background, many of my playmates had gradually dropped out, and very few finished high school.
