[edit] Mission of Great Wilderness
We support people living in the rich biodiversity of tropical bioregions where the preservation of natural ecosystems is critical to sustaining life. Addressing needs in education, healthcare, social justice and economic sustainability are necessary to conserve threatened natural areas and their inhabitants. [edit] Brief History of Great Wilderness
In 2005, Soraya Delgado, Karl Berg, Dr. Vicki Breazeale and Bill Steele traveled to Ecuador to visit the areas where Soraya and Karl had been conducting research for many years. They visited several conservation initiatives and were struck by the existence of a pattern.
Each project fit the necessary criteria for success: there was a clear need, qualified people running the projects and a reasonable work plan, but despite the presence of a strong team and strategy the projects were continually being stalled due to a lack of resources.
These resources included technology, infrastructure, funding and education. The ideas were sound but the initiatives were working at a disadvantage, they could not learn from the work of similiar projects or connect with potential donors. The four of them recognized a problem that occurs throughout the developing world, disjointed conservation efforts that result from a lack of resources and communication technology.
There are countless projects that are worth funding, but often they remain "good ideas" because the people creating them do not have the benefit of learning from the experiences of others, Soraya, Karl, Bill, and Vicki saw an opportunity to take an innovative approach towards sustaining conservation projects by building the capacity of local partners in the developing world and providing US representation to small NGO's.
They made a commitment to create an organization that bridges the gap between local, national and international groups by creating mechanisms for communication that connect organizations and individuals who are working towards common goals.
