User:Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm on a wiki-break for the moment, to work on "Project E"

Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste.

"Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici" = Latin, "I by the power of Truth, while living, have conquered the Universe"

Just call me "V" for short.

There is a face beneath this mask of a screename but it is not me: I am no more that face than I am the muscles beneath it, or the bones beneath them. Beneath this mask there is more than flesh, there is an Idea; and Ideas are bulletproof.

[edit] Stuff I work on

Well check my user boxes below, but predominantly I guess I'm editing stuff relating to WikiProject Middle-earth and WikiProject anime. I really like Star Trek, Star Wars, Re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, etc. etc. but really there are more experienced people than me to deal with these things (I have watched everything, but I don't live and breath it and obsess over the tiniest details. I respect those that do, it's just that after taking a long break from online I realized "wow, I need to have my own life and remember this is something I do for fun, and one show or book obsession cannot be the be-all and end-all of my existence...I can like more than one show at a moderate level though". At any rate, it's sort of "what am I trying to prove?": I come on here casually for fun, and if I see something I'll change it but I'm really not heavily working on anything. Besides, if there is an episode of Star Trek on TV and I'm on the computer, I might add something to MemoryAlpha (the dedicated Star Trek wiki) but anonymously without a screename there, because its about the show and not screenames and crud.

At any rate, I read a lot of stuff on wikipedia nowadays without changing alot, and most of wikipedia's Middle-earth articles have been rounded out fairly well at this point (right now its mostly about making sure they aren't vandalized) but stuff which is actually in my watchlist that I'm currently working on are:

  • All things relating to Neon Genesis Evangelion; also Rebuild of Evangelion and the Evangelion Live Action Movie. I also started the List of Neon Genesis Evangelion episodes and started all of the individual episode articles (well, I wrote most of them myself at this point, but I do hope that over time people will add more to them than I could; I was surprised no one had done it already).
  • Stuff relating to The Big O: an incredibly good anime series. Most of what I wanted to write for it is pretty much done at this point (plus the series has been over for some time now). If ever there is a marathon on and the mood takes me I might add more in. I think one of my many summer projects might be to write up a full episode guide for The Big O, to co-incide with the release of the full series DVD box set. It's funny; the series is over, there probably won't be a movie or anything to finish it up; it didn't *truly* end and the writer actually said there was going to be a third season. Still, I consider it one of the best anime series EVER MADE because its so anachronistic (it's not drawn like an anime or anything) and it feels more like a science fiction movie. So I might as well.
  • All things relating to Elfen Lied: WOW is this a good series: the first thing since Eva to really shock me (though Big O was almost as good as Eva, it was not as shocking and mature as Elfen Lied). Elfen Lied I see as sort of this huge underdog, in that its a great series but runs into a lot of censorship problems: Adult Swim has openly said that they asked if they could run it and the censorship board said there was no way in hell they could show even an edited version of it on basic cable. However, in the 2 years since it came out word of mouth has been spreading about it and it was ADV's highest selling DVD set of the year. Stinks it only got one season. Who knows, maybe one day the word of mouth will build up to the point that they make Elfen Lied 2. I don't know.
  • Things that Dr. Stephen Colbert tells me to edit on wikipedia.
  • Things relating to The Venture Bros. GO TEAM VENTURE!
  • I like to chronicle the storyline of Matrix Online so other people who don't play it can understand what the continuing story of the Matrix is. I set up some basic stuff there, but one day I'm going to go through their official messageboard "event" archives to develop a more complete chronicling of the story. Let's hope it's actually building up to something.
  • One of my insane long-term goals is to found "WikiProject FastFood" and a FastFood Portal, basically uniting all articles on McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc. into one central hub.

[edit] Rambling

I am proud to be a member of the Colbert Nation, and Stephen's word-of-the-year Wikiality was a great criticism of Wikipedia which I share: truth by consensus. Just like in "Exopedianism" above, I believe that material should be kept if it is accurate, and that wikipedia often allows people to decide what is "true" based on the demogoguery of democracy rather than on merit. Truth is not a democracy or a subjective concept. That said, I recognize that I myself am not perfect.

I am an Exopedian in a strict sense of the word. I believe that Wikipedia's purpose is to be, essentially, an "online encyclopedia", and that it is not a "community" in any sense of the word. That's what messageboards or (gasp) real people are for. If a print encyclopedia you buy in a store is of poor quality, you would not be comforted by the fact that the group of 10 authors who wrote it got along well. However, if 7 out of 10 of these authors were fired because of their inability to contribute quality work, and the result was that the print encyclopedia you bought in a store was the most accurate one in existence....., well, frankly you would prefer that one. I only consider "work" on wikipedia to be changing content (or fact checking sources, etc.), and creating increasingly elaborate templates, bylaws, and wiki-community groups has clouded the true purpose of wikipedia. The Inclusionist in me believes that almost every piece of information should be retained in wikipedia, and it is inherently wrong to remove content simply for being "too long"; if it is accurate, it should stay.

When people are backed into a corner and have no other option left open to them, I believe that it is morally right to use violence for political change.
