Vesterled

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vesterled is a natural gas pipeline system, which runs from the Heimdal Riser platform in the North Sea to St. Fergus near Peterhead in Scotland. The pipeline is 361 kilometres long and has a diameter of 32 inches. The Vesterled consists two sections: a 38-kilometer long pipeline which is operational since 1 October 2001 links Heimdal Riser with the former Frigg Norwegian Pipeline, which runs from the Frigg field to St Fergus, alongside of the Frigg pipeline. This section became operational in August 1978. The capacity of Vesterled is about 12 bcm of natural gas annually. The pipeline system is operated by Gassco.

The name Vesterled is the term used by the Vikings for their westward voyages, i.e. vesterled = "the way westward".
