[edit] History

In the 1940s, Gary Vermeer invented a modified farm wagon with a mechanical hoist. The demand that followed led Gary to establish Vermeer Manufacturing Company in Pella, Iowa, in 1948. In the 1950's Vermeer began to produce other equipment, such as the 150 Pow-R-Driver, Pow-R-Sprinkler, and an innovative horizontal stump cutter, the design of which is still widely-used. A major breakthrough came in the agriculture industry was the development of the Vermeer 605 round baler. The idea came from the complaint of one Gary Vermeer's personal friends who complained about the burden of bailing heavy hay to feed his cows.

Gary Vermeer officially retired as CEO in 1989 from Vermeer Corporation but remains with the corporation as Chairman Emeritus of the Board. Gary's two children, Robert Vermeer and Mary Andringa Vermeer, took over the company after Gary's retirement. Robert Vermeer serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Mary Andringa Vermeer serves as President and Chief Executive Officer. They continue the philosopy of innovation and growth for Vermeer.

In 1991 Vermeer Corporation launched its NAVIGATOR horizontal directional drilling machine line-up which has been instrumental in installing fiber optics for the world's information superhighway. As a leading trencher equipment manufacturer, Vermeer trenching equipment has been utilized on road construction and mining projects, within the equipment rental industry, and various other job applications.

Today, Vermeer operates with roughly 1.5 million square feet of plant space while manufacturing and marketing roughly 100 different agricultural and industrial products worldwide.
