Vergere is a fictional character from the Star Wars Expanded Universe. She first appeared in Greg Bear's novel Rogue Planet, and was a major supporting character in the New Jedi Order series.

She was a former Jedi Knight of the Old Republic, but became a Grey Jedi by the time of the New Jedi Order. She was a member of the birdlike Fosh species, and the former apprentice of Thracia Cho-Leem.

According to the Dark Lady of the Sith Lumiya, Vergere allied herself with Count Dooku in order to learn more of the Force, including the dark side. In this pursuit, she encountered Darth Sidious, who trained her as a Sith adept. Vergere eventually realized that Sidious was corrupting the Republic in his civilian guise as Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, and tried to kill him. She failed, however, and barely escaped with her life.

In Rogue Planet, the Jedi Council received reports of an attack on the planet Zonama Sekot, which built incredibly fast spaceships. Vergere went to investigate, using this as an excuse to put Sidious' assassins far behind her. Upon arrival, she discovered that the alien attackers, the Yuuzhan Vong, were far more mysterious than expected.

In the New Jedi Order series, Vergere's time with the Yuuzhan Vong is explored more in depth. She learned that they were an extragalactic species, and ultimately planned to take control of the galaxy. Realizing that the Galactic Republic and the Jedi were not prepared to fight these creatures, Vergere agreed to go with them into their galaxy if they would break off their attack. Amazed by her Jedi talents, which she told them came from Zonama Sekot, they eagerly agreed.

Over a period of 50 years, Vergere lived with the Yuuzhan Vong, teaching them about the Republic and the Jedi while secretly building up a collection of information about the extragalactic aliens themselves; she was out of Palpatine's reach during the extermination of the Jedi during Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. When the Vong decided to invade the Republic once more, Vergere continued to help them. She rose through their ranks, becoming an important rival to Nom Anor. The Fosh led young Jedi Jacen Solo into captivity three times before betraying the Yuuzhan Vong and freeing him.

The New Republic imprisoned her for a time while they determined whether she was a defector or a spy. Vergere had several discussions with Jedi Master Luke Skywalker about the nature of the Force and the Yuuzhan Vong. Skywalker wondered why they were seemingly outside of the Force, and whether they deserved the same rights as others. She convinced him that they did, changing some of his opinions on the Jedi Knights' part in the war. She had told Jacen the same earlier and Jacen had compared the Yuuzhan Vong to the light spectrum, coming to the conclusion that although the Jedi could not see the Yuuzhan Vong, that didn't mean they were outside the Force, just the ability of the Jedi to see.

She learned of the deadly Alpha Red bioweapon and destroyed it, which led the New Republic to label her as an enemy and force her into hiding. Vergere died soon after when she crashed an A-wing into the asteroid Ebaq 9, saving Jacen and his twin sister Jaina and killing all but one of the Yuuzhan Vong invaders on the surface. The one survivor was Warmaster Tsavong Lah. She appeared to Jacen Solo after her death, comforting him. She and Luke Skywalker believed that he had a special destiny, and that she must aid him in finding it.

Vergere concealed her Jedi powers from the Yuuzhan Vong war coordinators, the yammosks, by learning to "make herself small". She would shrink her presence in the Force to a microscopic size, where she was almost undetectable. In this state she could also modify tiny things like molecules. This allowed her to give certain chemical properties to her tears (or anything else if she so chose), such that they could be anything from healing fluids to paralytic toxins. Through them she healed Mara Jade Skywalker and ruined the Alpha Red project. She was attempting to teach this ability to Jedi Master and healer Cilghal before she chose to sacrifice her life to save Jacen.

Vergere changed sides throughout the war, guided by her own views of right and wrong. Her efforts ensured the survival of both sides and thereby prolonged the war, but also ensured the chance of peace to be formed later. Vergere saw this as universal mathematical economics. She and Jacen actually made their own side, after their escape from Coruscant, Jacen told Vergere that everything would go slightly wrong for the Yuuzhan Vong on Coruscant, because the World Brain was now on "our side". When she asks him if he meant by "our" the New Republic, he told her no, saying that he meant the two of them, Vergere and Jacen. One was a Teacher and a Student, the other was a Student and a Teacher.

Vergere's teachings made a lasting impact upon Jacen, influencing him to embrace a "broader" view of the Force that did not necessarily forbid the use of emotions such as anger and passion. Vergere's influence troubled Jacen's mother, Leia Organa-Solo, as well as his uncle, Luke; they both saw in her teachings an unsettling resemblance to those Palpatine had once used to corrupt their father, Anakin Skywalker. However as pointed out in another article, Vergere's teachings had a key difference than those of Palpatine, control. While Palpatine wanted Luke to surrender to his Anger, which would lead to the Dark Side. Vergere wanted Jacen to surrender to the Force, which is exactly what Ganner and Anakin Solo had done. Ganner had done so to hold back the Vong to allow Jacen to escape Coruscant, and Anakin had done the same earlier to allow his friends to escape Myrkr. Neither Anakin or Ganner "went Dark" when they surrendered to the Force, this is why Vergere says that the corruption lay not in the Force which is and is not all things at the same time, but rather in the individual person's Heart and Soul. The Force then would not pick sides, the person would choose what to wield it for. And Jacen wasn't a stranger to choosing, Vergere had made him choose between Good and Evil twice since his final capture, the first when Nom Anor handed Jacen Anakin's Lightsaber, and the second when they were under the Old Republic's Jedi Temple, both times Jacen chooses Good over Evil.
