The Verbandsliga is the 6th tier of football in Germany, except in Northern Germany, where it is the fifth tier, played on a regional basis by Bundesland. In Sachsen, Thüringen, Hessen and Bavaria the 5th tier is called Landesliga, which is the 6th tier in some of the other Bundesländer.

There are 21 regional Football Associations in Germany, below the German Association DFB. Of those, 17 have a Verbandliga as their highest division, only in the two largest associations, Bavaria and Hessen is the Oberliga in place of a Verbandsliga. Sachsen and Thüringen have chosen to call its highest league Landesliga instead. In Northern Germany, in the states of Hamburg, Bremen, Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen, no Oberliga exists from the year 2008, and the Verbandsligas are the tier below the Regionalliga. All up, there is currently nineteen Verbandsligas and eight Landesligas.

In most areas, the Verbandsligas were introduced in 1978 as a replacement for the Amateurligas.

  • The Landesligas of Thüringen and Sachsen are unique in their naming as every other league in Germany of this standing carries the name Verbandsliga. This was done so simply by choice of the local football associations (German:Fussball Verband) in Sachsen and Thüringen and the name could be changed to Verbandsliga if they wish to do so. Bavaria and Hessen do not have this option however, since their Landesligas are not the highest leagues in the Verband. This position is held by the Oberligas in those two states.
