Unfortunately, it's impossible to prove that the Sten was any good, except for the fact that so many countries kept on using it for so long.

There are so many 3rd hand anecdotes passed on via bulletin boards which get exaggerated every time. There are so many "My grandad's friend's brother once told me that that the Sten gun was no good" stories out there and they have become self-sustaining. Any bad thing you say about the Sten is automatically believed, even if it's gibberish.

I have first-hand experience of the Sten gun because I used a Mk II Sten (dated 1944) a few decades ago. I lost count of how many magazines I fired. My Sten was a bastardised version insofar as it was a Mk II fitted with a Mk V barrel and had a bronze bolt. It rarely jammed and in my opinion it was a very effective weapon out to 30 yards. It's true about the magazine lips deforming, and it's true that early production was pretty rough. However, the quality control improved and so did the design.

I can't provide citations about how good the Sten was because the anti-Sten propaganda nullifies anything you can see in the videos in the external hyperlinks section.

The "Stens are no good" story still gets repeated by people whose experience of it is limited to "using" one in some computerised war game, rather than getting their fingers sore from filling Sten magazines with a loading tool. I'm not saying the Sten was perfect, but it was a lot better than all the 3rd hand anecdotes suggest. Nabokov 14:04, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

It's a simple case of case in a published source to account for the opinions. For example if a collector, collector society, or magazine (eg. I have seen one that disparaged the M41 Johnson Rifle far less than it's reputation would suggest) published an article on the Sten it's no problem to just cite the source. Furthermore I wish to make clear that shooting a weapon at the range is a small part of testing a military weapon's effectiveness. It must also be "soldier proof". Weapons like that are carried through bad conditions, they are dropped, fell upon, and pick up the debris of the battlefield.
