Venus Brown (real name Darren Floyd, born: Wilmington, North Carolina) is the founder of Buddah Brown Entertainment, an artist management music label.[1]
[edit] Beginnings
Venus Brown began working in the music industry in the late 1980's hosting his own radio show on WKYS in Washington D.C. Browns' radio show later led to an internship at the Black Entertainment Television (BET) D.C. Headquarters working in the fields of television production and talent coordination. The internship allowed Brown to write for the BET program Video Soul where he met R&B artist Patti LaBelle. Venus Brown went on to write and co-produce the Big Daddy Kane and Patti LaBelle hit, "Feels Like Another One."[2]
Inspired by a guitarist-friend/Music Mentor from Cincinnati, the early 90's saw Brown move on to work with artists such as MC Hammer, H-Town and Boyz II Men. Brown has toured as a musician, stating one of his most memorable moments was DJ'ing for Rakim on The Tonight Show. Brown also managed the group Truth Hurts on behalf of acclaimed rapper/producer, Dr. Dre.[3]
In 1998 Venus Brown was signed to D'Angelo music label, Cheeba Music. Brown eventually released himself from the contract as Cheeba Musics' parent label, Virgin Records choose to put further Cheeba Music releases on hold until D'Angelo's second album was complete. Tar Baby, Venus Browns debut album was eventually released on Boulevard Connection in June 2001. 1998 also brought about the friendship of Brown and Black Eyed Peas artist will.i.am. The friendship that formed eventually led to Brown being offered the position of President/CEO of the will.i.am Music Group under Interscope Records in 2005.[4] With the new position under way Brown handled the signing of acts, contract negotiations and A&R work for the expanding label. Brown eventually went on to handle A&R work for Justin Timberlakes' Grammy award winning album FutureSex/LoveSounds,[5] and founding his own label, Buddah Brown Entertainment.[6]
