[edit] Background

The main feud heading into Vengeance was between Chris Benoit and Triple H, with the two battling over the World Heavyweight Championship. In January at the Royal Rumble, Chris Benoit won the Royal Rumble match and earned a World Heavyweight Championship match against Triple H at WrestleMania.[4] At WrestleMania, Benoit defeated champion Triple H and Shawn Michaels in a Triple Threat match to win the World Heavyweight Championship. Benoit won the match by forcing Triple H to submit to the Crippler Crossface.[5]

[edit] Event

Before the Pay-per View went on live. Tyson Tomko defeated Val Venis on Sunday Night Heat.

The first match was Tajiri and Rhyno versus Garrison Cade and Jonathan Coachman. Tajiri's team won after Cade got delivered a Gore by Rhyno and Coachman got delivered a Buzzsaw kick by Tajiri and pinning Coachman to pick up the victory for his team.[6]

The next match was Batista going up against Chris Jericho. The match started with Batista getting the advantage by hitting some big moves. Jericho would then play around with Batista by getting Batista to fall out of the ring. Jericho would then follow up by hitting a kick onto Batista. Batista would then put Jericho in a choke hold. Then Jericho would try and put Batista into the Walls of Jericho, but Batista would reverse the Walls of Jericho into a Spinebuster. The match would go back and fourth, but at the end Batista would win the match after delivering Jericho a Batista Bomb. Jericho would have his foot on the bottom rope but the referee didn't see it.[6]

The next match was Eugene and Ric Flair versus La Résistance (Róbert Conway and Sylvain Grenier) for the World Tag Team Championship. The match started with Eugene using Flair's taunts to piss off La Resistance, but La Resistance would get the advantage for about 5 seconds until Eugene got the upper hand. Highlights of the match were, Eugene delivering Grenier a Rock Bottom and Conway a Stone Cold Stunner and Flair locking Grenier in the Figure Four Leglock. At the end it was Eugene getting himself intentionally disqualified after he pushed the referee.[6]

Moments later Hardy would run Kane's head into the steel post followed by Hardy hitting Kane with a television monitor. Kane and Hardy would get on the spanish announce table, then Hardy went for a Twist of Fate but Kane would then push Hardy off the table into the security wall head first. Kane would then deliver Hardy an uppercut, which made Hardy fall over the security wall. Both men would dominate the remainder of the match. Highlights of the remainder of the match were Kane running Hardy into the steel steps, Kane smashing Hardy head into the entrance way steel floor, Hardy delivering Kane a leg drop, Hardy deivering Kane a Twist of Fate, Kane delivering Hardy a chokeslam moments later and Kane bringing in the steel steps. At the end Hardy would win the match after he hit Kane with a steel chair which ricocheted the steel steps off his face.[6]

After Eugene smashed the steel chair into Triple H's face he run out of the ring which allowed Benoit to pin Triple H after a roll-up, thus retaining the World Heavyweight Championship.[7]

[edit] Aftermath

On the July 26 edition of Raw, Randy Orton competed in a 20 man over the top rope Battle Royal to determine who would be the Number 1 Contender for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam. Orton won the match by last eliminating Chris Jericho. At SummerSlam, Orton faced Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship. Orton won the match by pinfall after performing an RKO. The next night, Evolution (Batista, Ric Flair and Triple H) threw a mock celebration for Orton's victory over Benoit, it was only a ruse. Evolution assualted Orton and kicked Orton out of Evolution. The next week, Triple H forced Orton to give him the World Heavyweight Championship, but instead Orton spat in Triple H's face, which was then preceeded by Orton hitting Triple H in the head with the belt. Later that night, Triple H faced Eugene in a No Disquallification match, which Eugene won after Orton interfered and executed an RKO on Triple H, which allowed Eugene to pin him for the victory. It was then announced that Orton would have to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Triple H at the next Raw pay-per view, which was Unforgiven. At Unforgiven, Triple H defeated Orton to win the World Heavyweight Championship by pinfall after executing a Pedigree onto a steel chair, which ended Orton one month reign as World Heavyweight Champion.
