Vengeance (2003) was the third annual Vengeance professional wrestling pay-per-view event from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It took place on July 27, 2003 at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado and was the first SmackDown! brand-exclusive pay-per-view. The official theme song was "Price to Play" by Staind.
The main event was between Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle and The Big Show in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship, which Angle won after delivering Lesnar an Angle Slam.[1] The main matches on the undercard were John Cena versus The Undertaker, Vince McMahon vs. Zach Gowen, and Eddie Guerrero vs. Chris Benoit for the WWE United States Championship.[1]

[edit] Background
The main feud heading into Vengeance was between Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar and The Big Show battling for the WWE Championship. It all started at WrestleMania XIX when Angle suffered a broken neck in his match against Lesnar for the WWE Championship. Lesnar also suffered a concussion when he missed a shooting star press onto Angle; however, Lesnar won the WWE Title anyway. Two months later, after Angle had returned from his surgery, he came out and demanded a WWE Championship shot. Lesnar agreed, but Show came out and also demanded a Championship opportunity. Later that night Vince McMahon decided that it would be Lesnar defending the Title against Angle and Show in a triple threat match at Vengeance. Then the remaning weeks leading up to Vengeance they had a series of triple threat matches, which saw Angle pinning Show after an Angle Slam, Lesnar pinning Angle after an F-5 and Show pinning both Angle and Lesnar after a double chokeslam.[1]
The secondary feud heading into Vengeance was between John Cena and The Undertaker.[1] Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero had a match in the finals of a tournament to crown the new U.S. Champion. Vince McMahon was feuding with the one-legged Zach Gowen.
[edit] Event
Angle would pin Lesnar after the delivery of an Angle Slam to win the triple threat for the WWE title. Undertaker would defeat Cena in a 16-minute match. McMahon would defeat Gowen, and Gurrerro would defeat Benoit in the tournament finals to become the new United States champion. Also, Bradshaw would win a Bar Room Brawl Battle Royal.
[edit] Aftermath
After Angle won the WWE Title from Lesnar, the two had a rematch at SummerSlam 2003. Angle retained the WWE Championship. Cena and Taker's feud would end. Taker would go on to be a challenger for the WWE title in the fall.
