Talk:Venturing (Boy Scouts of America)/Archive 1

Someone with a reliable set of dates needs to finish up the history section so that it reflects everything that's happened from 1998 onwards. Thesquire 19:59, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

History
I have included information on the National Venturing President, name and information on the selection of the President both in 1998 and thereafter.
I did some updates. Whoever edited the info on the selection process had some errors. Youth have NEVER selected the National Venturing Cabinet. --Emb021 30 June 2005 18:38 (UTC)
Technically...you are correct. The youth of "venturing" never elected a cabinet. The first Venturing cabinet (which incidentally was also the last exploring cabinet) was selected from the youth of the exploring program. Thanks for updating. Are you in the cabinet?
No, am a little too old. :) I maintain the History of Senior Scouting Programs of the BSA website. On that site I maintain a list of all the National Venturing Cabinet (and its Explorer predecessor). --Emb021 1 July 2005 14:36 (UTC)
I've added more info on post-1998 history and changes in the program, and made it a little clear (I think) regarding youth officers about the unit level. --Emb021 1 July 2005 18:45 (UTC)
Question? Would people like pages on Kodiak and Powder Horn? --Emb021 1 July 2005 19:07 (UTC)
I've created the beginings of a PH page. Someone added some needless text at the end of the Venturing article on PH that I removed, and someone created a page on both PH & Sea Badge, despite the fact there is already a Sea Badge page. --Emb021 21:30, 5 August 2005 (UTC)
Ok, have created VLSC & Kodiak/Kodiak X pages. Take a look. --Emb021 19:46, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
The two ACLU links are dead. I've searched the ACLU site with no luck. Anyone have a clue? --Gadget850 ( Ed) 15:54, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Advancement?
In venturing there is no such thing as Advancement, where is there to advance to.
- you might want to re-read the Venturing literature. They refer to the awards as advancement awards. The Bronze-Gold-Silver awards are the 'basic advancement awards', while Ranger, Quest, and TRUST are expert awards. The Silver Award is the highest Venturing award, which is why it gets a knot. --Emb021 16:46, 17 January 2006 (UTC)
There is the award system, i have some hand-outs I once got detailing why it isn't advancement, over the winter break I will fix that part up a little more. CuBiXcRaYfIsH 04:16, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- Properly, its a recognition system. Recognition, not advancement, is a method of Venturing. However, many involved in Venturing, due to their previous involvement with Cub Scouting &/or Boy Scouting, use the term 'advancement', and it shouldn't be a big deal. Heck, the Venturing manuals call them advancement awards. Sea Scouts, but the way, DO have advancement. --Emb021 19:46, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Merger of Powder Horn page
Someone has suggested the Powder Horn page be merged with this Venturing page. As the person who created the PH page, I'm not in favor of this. I don't know who suggested this or why, but they obviously don't understand what PH is. I vote NO. -- Emb021 (talk • contribs) 10:07, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- I didn't suggest the merge or anything, but you might want to give actual reasons why they should be seperate articles. Tell us why, not just that we/they/it "doesn't understand." - make them understand. Explain the differences etc. Basically, you need to always back up your arguments with reasons, or they hold no weight. --Naha|(talk) 21:48, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

- Well, I would have liked to have seen the reason(s) why someone thought they should be merged. Am getting a little annoyed with unknown people proposing mergers and not explaining why. Its a little rude.
-
- But to answer your question. Venturing is a fairly large program. The article is trying to cover the entire program, without getting too deep into any one area. Powder Horn is a fairly important training program. It is equivalent to Wood Badge. WB has its own page, and I think more people who have been involved with it can understand why it has a separate page. The BSA has several other major training programs, most of which now have their own pages on Wikipedia: NYLT, VLSC, Kodiak/Kodiak-X, Sea Badge, and PH. When you consider that PH is a weeklong training event, it strikes me as a fairly important enought topic to justify spending 'time' in its own article. --Emb021 23:56, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, makes sense to me. I didn't adress the person who put up the merger notice because I didn't know who it was ..they should have started a conversation here. I agree, it was rude. As far as I am concerned, go ahead and take the notice off and feel free to expand the article for Powder Horn, good luck! --Naha|(talk) 01:41, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- I looked up the page history and saw that User:Kintetsubuffalo was the person who put up the merge notices, and have left a note on his talk page that he should explain his reasoning here. -- Thesquire (talk - contribs) 04:16, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
keep if it can be expanded into a good article. --Gadget850 ( Ed) 14:04, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

- To the author of this article, I am by no means "unknown people", I am one of the more active contributors to Scouting articles on the Wikipedia.
- To both you and Naha, it is not at all "rude" for someone to propose mergers of stubs, for any reason. Three months ago, there were less than two dozen Scouting stubs, now there are over 100. My purpose is not to insult anyone, but as per the Scouting WikiProject, to clean up, clarify and make Scouting articles more useful for the general Wikipedian. That includes condensation of stubs into larger, broader articles.
- To that end, I will vote with Ed to keep if it can be expanded into a good article.
- And in future, please remember you're a Scout before you accuse others. Chris 17:12, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
- I'm the author of that article. I, too, am an active contributor to the scouting articles (I've lost track of how many articles I've created, fixed, expanded, etc). The issue to me is less the merger proposal, as to do so without explaining your reasons, as someone else has pointed out. It's what I would have done in the same position, and a reasonable expectation. --Emb021 20:25, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Keep Separate. PH is essentially the equivalent of Wood Badge and Wood Badge is separate. PH can be expanded. I'll put it on the Todo list. Rlevse 18:28, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Comment. It's not hard to figure out who made an edit. Whenever a merge is proposed, please start the discussion why your reasoning. Rlevse 18:36, 31 January 2006 (UTC)
Re Org
Using a proposed re-org outline for all BSA division pages, have done some work on the Venturing page. Most is just re-ording sections to bring it in-line, plus some new sections. Everyone, take a look and revise as you feel its needed (ie Activities, especially). --Emb021 20:15, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
