While something of an obscure topic, the Vengalil family were very powerful in Kerala between 1600 and 1947 and were responsible for governing much of Travancore, Cochin, Malabar, and other regions. It has also had several notable members, and was politically powerful in post-independence Kerala. I am working on finding the correct citations.
