Velva is a city in McHenry County, North Dakota in the United States. The population was 1,049 at the 2000 census. Velva was founded in 1897.

Velva is sometimes nicknamed "The Star City". Outside of North Dakota, it is known as the birthplace of the noted television correspondent, Eric Severeid.

Velva was officially founded in 1883 by August Peterson, a Swedish immigrant. Inheriting a tract of land from his brother, Peterson's property grew to become the town of Velva. Peterson sold 40 acres to the railroad, then sold additional acres to the city. From there, the town grew into what it is today.

Velva is located at 48°3′29″N, 100°55′48″W (48.058081, -100.930092)[3].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.0 km²), all of it land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 1,049 people, 436 households, and 275 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,359.7 people per square mile (526.0/km²). There were 483 housing units at an average density of 626.1/sq mi (242.2/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.33% White, 0.10% African American, 0.19% Native American, and 0.38% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.

There were 436 households out of which 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 34.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.97.

In the city the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 5.1% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 26.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 89.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,738, and the median income for a family was $36,477. Males had a median income of $26,726 versus $17,375 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,267. About 7.8% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.5% of those under age 18 and 17.3% of those age 65 or over.

As the retail and commercial center of McHenry County and nearby areas, the city of Velva has a more robust economy than many cities of similar size. Agricultural processing and software development are the main primary-sector industries. Velva is the headquarters of the Verendrye Electric Cooperative, formerly located in nearby Verendrye, and has also seen some use as a bedroom community for Minot.

Velva Public School has approximately 475 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through 12, all present in the same building. Services offered by the Velva School District include special education and an on-site counselor. Elective courses available to middle and high school students include Spanish II, art, creative writing, physics, chemistry, technology, and advanced math classes.

  • Star City Golf Course - a nine-hole golf course located north of Velva on Highway 41. It measures 5,568 yards from the back tees.
