Vellangallur kovilakam is an old branch of Kodungallur kovilakam (Trichur-Kerala), one of the royal families in central Kerala. Vellangallur kovilakam and Palapetty kovilakam are also related branches.
The family consists of two groups, the Malika kovilakam and the Madathil kovilakam branches.
The total strength of the family is close to 80.

The history says[citation needed] this royal family has roots from Mukundapuram swaroopam, was one of the prominent rulers based in Trichur (Kerala).
Puthiya kavil bhagavathy is the family goddess whose temple is located near Konathukunne.
