Velké Meziříčí

Velké Meziříčí (IPA: [ˈvɛlkɛ: ˈmɛzɪr̝i:tʃi:]; German: Groß Meseritsch) The town is situated under the original Gothic castle in a valley framed by the hills of the Moravian Highlands. Velké Meziříčí is situated on the tributary of the Oslava and Balinka Rivers near the motorway D1. First written records about the town come from the 12th century. The settlement obtained city rights in 1408. Historical centre was designated as conserved zone of sights where the castle (formerly a stronghold from the 12th century), Gothic St. Nicolas Church, originally Gothic city hall, Renaissance Lutheran Grammar School, Jewish Synagogues and partly remained city walls with the gate are the most significant buildings. An independent Jewish community had been living in the city since the 17th century – well-preserved Jewish graveyard with Baroque tombstones comes from the 17th century.
