Serbian car license plate codes consist of a two-letter region code, followed by two 2- or 3-digit numbers, separated by hyphen (e.g. BG 123-456).

According to the new proposal given by the new Road safety law in 2008,there are 18 more cities that will be introduced as new regions with their own car plates. These regions are
- AL - Aleksinac (Aleksinac,Ražanj)

- KŽ - Knjaževac (Knjaževac, Soko Banja)
- KO - Kovin (Kovin)
- NG - Negotin (Negotin,Kladovo)
- PP - Prijepolje (Prijepolje)
- PT - Petrovac na Mlavi (Petrovac na Mlavi,Žagubica)
- SV - Svilajnac (Svilajnac,Despotovac)
- SP - Smederevska Palanka (Smederevska Palanka)
- ST - Stara Pazova (Stara Pazova)
- ŠI - Šid (Šid)
- VP - Velika Plana (Velika Plana)
- VB - Vrbas (Vrbas,Srbobran)

The following car plates were used in Kosovo up to 1999. They are superseded by car plates issued by UNMIK, in format 3-digit number-KS-3 digit number. The old plates are still valid on the rest of the territory of Serbia, and used on cars belonging to Serbian refugees from Kosovo[1] (but new codes are not issued anymore[verification needed]).
