Vehicle registration plates of Pakistan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eight types of vehicle licence plates are used in Pakistan. Each province and territory issues its own number plate; the federal government issues number plates for foreign diplomats and vehicles owned by the military, police and federal departments (red for foreign diplomats and green for the federal government).

All number plates use the Latin alphabet.

[edit] Islamabad Capital Territory

Plates are white with black letters and numbers.

[edit] Punjab

On 1 January, 2007 Punjab began issuing official number plates for all cars registered in Punjab. Number plates are of green and white colour. The green part is the same all over Punjab and has a sign and 'Punjab' written on it, while the white part has the number of the vehicle.

For example:

RIZ 3725, is a vehicle registered in Rawalpindi, Punjab.
MNE 6762, is a vehicle registered in Multan, Punjab.

[edit] Sindh

All private plates are yellow with black letters while all the commercial plates are black with white letters. Issued by the Government of Sindh, they all carry the seal of the department of excise and taxation.

[edit] Pre 1996

Private plates were of the form X-NNNN where 'X' represented an alphabet and 'N' represented a number. All cities issued their own, with the name of the respective city at the bottom of the plate.

[edit] Post 1996

After the letters were finished, a new form XXX-NNN was introduced where 'XXX' is a string of alphabets starting AAA and 'NNN' is a string of numbers starting 001, both following a logical order.

Although not officially, the alphabet string can be used to correspond to the year the car was first registered with the government of Sindh, e.g a car with registration AAB-001 would have been first registered in 1996 while one with AFR-001 in 2004.

[edit] Balauchistan

Plates are white with black letters and numbers.

[edit] NWFP

Plates are white with black letters and numbers. Additionally, some Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) issue their own plates.
