Barbadian vehicle registration plates start with a group of one or two letters. These indicate the parish of registration, or category of vehicle:

- A - Parish of St. Andrew
- E - Parish of St. Peter
- G - Parish of St. George
- J - Parish of St. John
- L - Parish of St. Lucy
- M - Parish of St. Michael
- O - Parish of St. Joseph
- P - Parish of St. Philip
- S - Parish of St. James
- T - Parish of St. Thomas
- X - Parish of Christ Church
The international code, which should be shown to the rear of the vehicle on a black-on-white oval, and to be carried by Barbadian vehicles when circulating outside Barbados is 'BDS'.
Owners may use white on black plates, front and rear, or black on white (front) and yellow(rear). Owners provide their own plates (not state-issued items).

- MP - Military and police vehicles (White on green)
- Z - Taxis. (Blue on white)

- M - (preceded by up to 4 numerals) - Motor Dealers (Red on white)
