I'm new on Wiki, can someone help mentor me? My interests are Las Vegas, Business, Education and Entertainment Thanks

Hi. In the future, you can add the text {{helpme}} and ask a question below it. This will make your help request appear on the category:Wikipedians looking for help and someone will get back to you. But for the moment, I'm here. So how can I help? --Ligulem 16:35, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Hi, Ligulem, thank you for your offer. I would like to add two articles, the first one is for Las Vegas 100 Founders and the second one is for Las Vegas Top 40 Under 40. So how can I create the articles?

Uh. That's somewhat delicate question :-). New articles are scrutinized against all sorts of policies and guidelines (You could start reading at Wikipedia:Community_Portal#Departments). So, don't be shocked if others will jump in and request early deletion (we do get a lot of crapsuboptimal new pages here :-). Remember: the goal here is to write an Encyclopedia. I have no clue what your article is about, but I would suggest you start it under your userspace and later move it to the correct location. From the technical side, creating a page is easy: if you do have a link somewhere, you can click the link and start it. If you agree to make your first steps under your userspace (which you can experiment with alone), you could for example start at User:Vegas.ed/Las Vegas 100 Founders (just click on the red link to start that page). If you really want to start the real article, just follow the link to Las Vegas 100 Founders. You can also enter the name of an article in the search box on the left. If it is inexistent, this will provide you a page with a redlink, which you can click to start the article. Side note: please sign your talk page posts with ~~~~. This will produce a signature when you save, just like mine: --Ligulem 17:13, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Las Vegas 40 Under 40

A tag has been placed on Las Vegas 40 Under 40, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article seems to be blatant advertising which only promotes a company, product, group or service and which would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the general criteria for speedy deletion, particularly item 11, as well as the guidelines on spam.

If you can indicate why the subject of this article is not blatant advertising, you may contest the tagging. To do this, please add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would help make it encyclopedic, as well as adding any citations from reliable sources to ensure that the article will be verifiable. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. andy 17:59, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Dear Andy, 40 under 40 Award is a well known program recognizing people who made an impact on their community. Leading U.S. and international newspapers use this program to acknowledge the contribution of these people. It is not a paid advertising by the honorees.

You can check http://www.google.com/search?num=20&hl=en&q=40+under+40+Award

On Wiki there is another similar article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_and_Mail's_Top_40_under_40

and several other articles referring to this award, here is 2 examples

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Ecko http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belinda_Stronach

In the light of the new information, I hope you would reconsider

I'm new to Wiki, so maybe you can help edit the text to make it more encyclopedic

Thanks Vegas.ed 18:38, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Vegas.ed: In reply to your post on my talk page: I'm sorry, but I have to agree that the Las Vegas 40 Under 40 article, as it is, at least lacks a neutral tone and I can understand that andy placed a speedy deletion tag on it. Wikipedians are very sensitive with regards to articles that might read like an advertisement, as a lot of people try to place advertisement-like pages in Wikipedia due to the high reputation/Google ranking of Wikipedia. Please note that in this case I won't decide myself whether the article falls under the speedy deletion criteria or not (one of the jobs admins do here). Some other uninvolved admin will do this. However, I am willing to continue helping you with any further questions you may have (as far as I can). The requirements for new articles are pretty high and it can be a daunting task to create a new article, especially for a newbie. I'm sorry that you made that experience, but I can't do much about it. Best thing would be to look at other articles and see if you can make your article as good as others (I mean the good ones, of course :-). I know, it's not easy. However, I really appreciate your friendly and respectful way you started on this wiki here. --Ligulem 19:32, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Well. I see you have recreated Las Vegas 40 Under 40. But that provides no context at all, as it is (another possible reason for a speedy deletion....). On Wikipedia you can use Special:Log to see things like deletes/restores/blocks etc. To see the log for a specifc page, enter the page name in the "Title" field. The direct link to the log of said page is: [1]. Also if you want to discuss an article page, don't post into the article, as you did. Use the "discussion" tab (this is called the "talk" page of an article, similar to this page here). --Ligulem 22:56, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Thanks again

I'm confused, how come they let the first posted article and not the second one? They are both lists of people acknowledged for their impact on the community?
What is the difference between my deleted article and the kept article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_and_Mail's_Top_40_under_40? To be candid, I'm disappointed, it seems to me that there are double standards in treating articles from various users or topics.
Anything or any list about people, places and companies, that I might post could be considered "Ads", so why would I bother contribute anything anymore, especially if I have to spend hours and then get my articles deleted? And the one who deleted it, did not even explain how to make it encyclopedic. - Am’I missing something here?

As I said. It's not easy for newbies. And the requirements for new articles are quite high. --Ligulem 08:11, 5 March 2007 (UTC)

Ligulem, I have to ask again, I asked a specific question, but got a general answer that does not address the question. I asked for the difference between my deleted article and the kept article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_and_Mail's_Top_40_under_40 ? My article is not different. Is it some kind of a privileged club to allow posting from some people and not others? I need to know. You are an admin, your answer determines whether it is worth for me to contribute to Wiki or not. I cannot waste hours posting articles and have someone delete them without specific answers or because of double standards. I removed the text with "Adv" tone and kept the list just like many other lists on Wiki, so, why is it being treated differently? If I post other lists of places and businesses, will they get deleted too? How can I avoid this? Please help. If you do not have the answer can you pose the question to other admins? I need a specifc answer as to the difference between my deleted article and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globe_and_Mail's_Top_40_under_40 This will help me avoid future deletions?

You should know that Globe and Mail's Top 40 under 40 is now up for deletion, so there is no favoritism being shown. Sometimes it just takes a while for an inappropriate article to get noticed and deleted, and that seems to be the case with the Globe and Mail one. CovenantD 06:58, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Las Vegas First 100

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Las Vegas First 100, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Las Vegas First 100. —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 06:13, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
