[edit] VAX RPG II & Migration RPG

Back in the 1980's and early 1990's Digital Equipment Corporation supported two RPG II compatible compilers, VAX RPG II and Migration RPG. VAX RPG II was supported by an internal Digital engineering group, while Migration RPG was a third party product that was purchased and supported by Digital's Center for Migration Services.

[edit] VAX RPG II Retirement

In 1990/1991, Digital decided to retire VAX RPG II. The Center for Migration Services was instructed to prepare for the transition of VAX RPG II customers to Migration RPG. As part of the program to ease customer transitions Migration RPG was renamed VAX RPG.

[edit] VAX RPG II Reprieve & the Name Game

At the eleventh hour the Digital engineering group supporting VAX RPG II arranged to transfer VAX RPG II to a third party. In order to alleviate the inevitable product confusion, the Center for Migration Services elected to change VAX RPG back to its old product name of Migration RPG. However, VAX RPG II's reprieve was announced 9 months after the release of VAX RPG and versions 1.0 and 2.0 of VAX RPG had already been distributed

Thus was created the confusion in product names. VAX RPG II is the product developed internally by Digital. VAX RPG is the third party Migration RPG product that was temporarily distributed under the VAX RPG name.
