Vaulx-en-Velin is a commune in the département of Rhône and the Rhône-Alpes region of France. It is the fifth-largest suburb of the city of Lyon, and is located to its northeast, on the Rhône River. It is a component of the metropolitan Urban Community of Lyon. In the 1999 census, Vaulx-en-Velin had a population of 39,154. The commune has a land area of 20.95 km² (8.089 sq mi).
