Vasif Talibov

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vasif Talibov (Azerbaijani: Vasif) (born 14 January 1960, Aralig, Nakhchivan ASSR, Azerbaijan SSR) is the current parliamentary chairman of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.[1] He is a member of the New Azerbaijan Party and is related to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.[2] Talibov is also known for his authoritarian rule in the region, being compared by Nakhchivan's residents to the former dictator of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov. [1] He intimidates all opposition and seizes "any private property he takes a liking to," while also arresting "whoever he wants." [1] His administration is also corrupt, with aid sent to Nakhchivan from foreign countries ending up in the hands of Talibov's relatives and close associates.[3]
