It has been growing since its inception and has established itself as one of the premier centers for teaching in the country.

The institute has 10 academic departments and state-of-the-art laboratories in various disciplines of engineering and sciences. The famous Taramati Baradari lies adjacent to this school's campus.

[edit] History

The college was established in the year 1981 by Sri Pendekanti Venkatasubbaiah who founded the Vasavi Academy of Education. Carrying on with the commitment of providing quality education, the Academy established various institutions in diverse disciplines such as management, law, music and dance. After a modest start, Vasavi College of Engineering has grown in leaps and bound to become an epitome of higher learning.

[edit] Campus

The entrance of VCE lies on the Mehdipatnam - Gandipet Road and is flanked by the historic Golconda Fort and Taramati Baradari. The campus is located about 15 km from Begumpet Airport, 17 km from Secunderabad railway station and is well connected by buses. A spacious parking lot and administrative buildings set amidst a lush green setting welcome the visitors.

[edit] Departments

Vasavi College of Engineering has seven engineering disciplies. They are:

  1. Civil Engineering
  2. Computer Science and Engineering
  3. Electronics and Communication Engineering
  4. Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  5. Information Technology
  6. Mechanical Engineering
  7. Production Engineering

There are also four other departments, that include the following:

  1. Chemistry
  2. Mathematics
  3. Physics
  4. Humanities and Social Sciences

[edit] Academics

Vasavi College of Engineering offers an undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in 7 disciplines of engineering. Over 150 faculty members belonging to various engineering departments are engaged in teaching, research and industrial consultancy.

The academic calendar is organized on semester programs. Each semester provides for a minimum of instructional days. English is the medium of instruction. The students are evaluated on a continuous basis throughout the semester in the form of tests, class assignments and/or projects. This constitutes the internal examination, often referred to as Internals. The students are subject to a final exam conducted by Osmania University, with which lies the responsibility of the final evaluation. This final examination is usually referred to as Externals. The degrees are awarded eventually by the University.

[edit] Undergraduate Academics

The 4 year undergraduate program is offered for all the seven engineering disciplines of

  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering and
  • Production Engineering

The students are subject to the evaluation process during their four year program. The Internals constitute the tests and assignments that are conducted every semester. This is the usual academic activity during the semesters. The senior year students complete a research thesis under the guidance of the college faculty.

[edit] Intake

The mandatory requirement for securing admission to the undergraduate program is to appear for the Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test, referred to as EAMCET. This test, which is conducted every year, is quite competitive with over 100,000 writing the test each year. Apart from the result of this test, the candidates are required to pass the examination of the Board of Intermediate Education, Government of Andhra Pradesh with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects, or any other examination recognized by the Osmania University as equivalent thereto. Based on the merit rank secured in this test, admissions are given to deserving applicants. Currently, 480 students are admitted into the undergraduate program every year.[citation needed] A break-up of the intake is given below.

Branch Intake
Civil Engineering 60
Computer Science and Engineering 120
Electronics and Communication Engineering 120
Information Technology 60
Mechanical Engineering 120
Production Engineering 0

[edit] Graduate Academics

A 3 year graduate program in the form of a Master's degree in Computer Applications (MCA) is offered by the college. Alongside this program, a 2 year graduate program that offers a Master's in Engineering (M. E.) in two disciplines, namely

  • Embedded Systems & VLSI Design
  • Advanced Design & Manufacturing

[edit] Intake

The intake to the 3 year Master's degree in Computer Applications is based on the performance in the Integrated Common Entrance Test (ICET), whereas, the admissions for the ME programs is through the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)

[edit] Other Academic Activities

The college aims to support students in all possible ways by providing them access to co-curricular programs and initiatives that enhance the knowledge of the students.

The Department of Civil Engineering has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SatNav (Satyam Navigation), a GIS company promoted by Satyam Computer Services Limited.[2] With this kind of Industry - Institute Partnership, the department hopes to assist the students in keeping pace with the contemporary technologies and practices. Along with this, it also provides student training, internship, and final year projects.

The college also offers a Java Enterprise Edition, (J2EE) program as a value-added course. Another MoU was signed between Vasavi College of Engineering and Pramati Technologies in the year 2002.[3] Thus, the J2EE Program at Vasavi College of Engineering started and developed with the assistance of Pramati Technologies through the Education and Training Partnership initiative. Since then 200 students have been trained in various Java technologies[4]

The students help a great deal in organizing and conducting the technical festival of the college, which is known as Acumen. Papers are invited from all across the country and festival is held for a period of 2 - 3 days.

[edit] Extracurricular Activities

The annual cultural festival of the college, Euphoria is held in spring. Euphoria, which is well recognized by the student community in the twin cities, continues to be a hall-mark event. The campus swells with hordes of students wanting to unwind with the host of activities that are held during the festival. The festival runs for three days of fun and frolic. The events range from informals, literary and cultural events to the crowd favorites like Jukebox and Frag Central (Multiplayer Tournament). Go-Karting was also conducted on one occasion in the year 2002[5]

The college has hosted several prominent entertainers including Shivamani, Parikrama and Ryan Beck. The event for the year 2007 continued the tradition with Jay Sean, Veronica, Indian Ocean and Prestorika performing in the evenings.[6]

[edit] Facilities

Vasavi College of Engineering houses a banking facility within its premises. Internet access is available throughout the academic zone as well. Canteen facilities for students and faculty is available. Library facility is also available with a total of 10000 volumes.

[edit] Alumni

The alumnus from this college have successfully settled down in different parts of the world. Vasavi College of Engineering Alumni Association (VCEAA) serves as the nostalgic link for the college's alumnus. The alumnus are kept posted on the latest happenings in the college. The college conducts an annual function, Reflections, in the month of December which brings alumni together to the college campus.
