Vardapet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Vardapet (Armenian: Վարդապետ)(or "doctor-monk") in the Armenian Christian tradition, is a highly educated preaching monk. The vardapet is a traveler who spreads the message of the Gospel of Christ from place to place, preaching the love of God.

In the English-speaking world the best known of the doctor-monks of Armenia is Mekhitar of Sebaste, founder of an Armenian Catholic community of monks, the Mechitarist Order.
