[edit] Name
There is a belief among some section of the people that the name Vaniyambadi derives from 'Vani' + 'Padi' (to sing). Vani is the name of the Hindu goddess Saraswathi. Folklore suggests that Vani sang on the banks of the river Palar at the request of the Hindu gods Vishnu and Shiva. Temples for Sundara Varadaraja Perumal (Vishnu) and Athitheeswarar (Shiva) lie on the either side of the river. However, this etymology needs to be verified; 'Padi' may also mean "group of people living together".
