Vanessa Rene (ヴァネッサ・レネ Vanessa Rene?) is a fictional character of the 26-episode anime Madlax created by Bee Train. She is voiced by Satsuki Yukino in the Japanese version, while voiced by Kelly Manison in the English version.

Vanessa is an intelligent person who graduated from Soldophine university[4] education in IT. She is Margaret Burton's former next door neighbor and private tutor, now currently works at Bookwald Industries. Vanessa's parents were arrested for involving in the Gazth-Sonika civil war, according to her opinions, they probably are not alive anymore.[2]

Vanessa meets Margaret when she failed to win an auction item, which later were sent to Friday Monday. Since there, she has lived and had meal at Margaret's house sometimes.

When she discovered that Bookwald is involved in the Gazth-Sonika civil war, she requested helps from her colleague Badgis to hack into Enfant's computer systems, eventually they transferred some informations to a Gazth-Sonikan high school student's data chip. Vanessa later flew to Gazth-Sonika and soon became a target to Enfant. When Enfant tries to assassinate her, Madlax was contracted to be her bodyguard. Although they're different in many ways, the two quickly became to develope mutual respect to each other and a romantic relationship. For some examples, when Vanessa asks Madlax how old is she, and she reply that Margaret is about the same age as her; or when she asks Madlax to sleep next to her.

The data Vanessa carries, however turned Enfant and the entire Gazth-Sonikan army against them, which later turned them into wanted criminals. After suffering some complex including being mocked a nuisance to Madlax by Limelda, Vanessa asks her to teach her how to use a gun.

After Vanessa reunited with Margaret, the four go to meet Quanzitta Marison, a mystic who can read the Elies letters; Quanzitta tells them about the Holy Books and Enfant is trying to collect them. Eventually, she gives Margaret her Thirstari, and Margaret used her Secondari and Monday's Firstari taken by Carrossea to open the Door of Truth. However, Madlax is attacked by Limelda Jorg, and Margaret is captured by Friday Monday.

Having been explained about the situation, they set off to look for Margaret, and later get separated with Madlax ends up fighting Limelda. While out looking for Margaret, Vanessa encounters Monday, who uses the Word of Awakening on her. Madlax appears, while looking at her, Vanessa saw Limelda aiming at Madlax, she immediately shoots her and accidentally takes the hit for Madlax to her death. She meets Madlax in a spiritual dimension, explains she wants to protect her friends before reunited with her family in the afterlife. Her body was found and buried by Elenore.

Last words: "Father... mother."
