Hi there. I have reverted the photograph you inserted at Katharine Hepburn because the file has no source or copyright information. Please read Wikipedia's copyright policies to learn more. Without sourcing or copyright information, the photograph you inserted is sure to be deleted and worse, could endanger Wikipedia by infringing on its copyright holder's rights. It's best to use an image we know is free, such as the one the article currently features. I am removing the photograph again, but please don't take it personally -- it's about protecting Wikipedia from copyright infringement. · Katefan0(scribble)/poll 05:06, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, well that's a bit better! I'm not meaning to be antagonistic, but how do you know -- for sure -- that this is a promotional still and not something taken by, say, Variety? The website you've listed here as its source doesn't say for sure that I can see. On the other hand, the Song of Love photograph is emblazoned with the MGM logo on the front and is undeniably a promotional still released by the studio. I agree that it's not the best photograph of her (see the talk page, where I've said as much), but the photograph does have the advantage of being absolutely above question as a press promo photograph released by the studio. · Katefan0(scribble)/poll 05:40, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
- Well, this latest image is also problematic, let me explain to you why. Magazine covers are used under the fair use portion of copyright law, and there are some instances in which they're okay to use. But this one falls afoul of the fair use laws because magazine covers are only considered fair use when they are illustrating an article about that magazine specifically. We could use this image as proper fair use if we were using it to illustrate an article about Hepburn's article in this magazine. But we can't use it just to illustrate an article about her in general. From our fair use policy, it is not fair use when we use: An image of a Barry Bonds baseball card, to illustrate the article on Barry Bonds. A sports card image is a legitimate fair use if it is used only to illustrate the article (or an article section) whose topic is the card itself. The Song of Love photograph also falls under the rubric of the same fair use policy, but the difference is that a) we mention Song of Love inside the article and b) the fair use bar for promotional photographs is lower than for magazine covers. For promo photos, it's only necessary that the photographs be for illustrative, rather than critical, purposes. This image must again be removed, I'm afraid, though I must say I rather like it better! · Katefan0(scribble)/poll 15:06, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
