Anarchy in Somalia

Yo, thanks for reviewing Anarchy in Somalia. I've made some initial responses to your comments on the talkpage. Regards, Skomorokh incite 03:27, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Further updated. Skomorokh incite 04:35, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Template:GA number

I am not sure if you monitor Template:GA number, but I don't think it was updated for Mercury Hayes earlier today. I know the reviewer did not, but several adjustments have been made to the count that don't state a specific article in the edit summary. You are much closer to this part of the process than I, so I don't want to double count or omit the article. Please make the proper correction.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 18:36, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Osprey caps

Okay, I'm confused now. Per Wikipedia:BIRD#Bird_names_and_article_titles and WP:MOS common names for bird species are capitalised; any reason why tehy shouldn't be for osprey (except when referring to the osprey family)? Sabine's Sunbird talk 22:57, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Re: Good articles

Hi Steve -- thanks for having a look at Iyasu V of Ethiopia. I'm not up to date on the procedure for GA, so whom would I ask any general questions about the article or the criteria? -- llywrch (talk) 04:52, 14 January 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay; I've had some personal business that's taking up my time. Here are my questions, posed in a manner that I hope is not comabtive, a failing I often display:
  • "In the intro, it calls him the 'designated but uncrowned' emperor. Shouldn't this say defacto?" -- IIRC, Ethiopian custom was that an Emperor would not be crowned until following an important event (like a military victory) in his reign. This was not unusual: another example Haile Selassie ruled for several months until he could throw a proper gala & introduce all of his titled visitors from Europe. However, I have the impression that this fact is often mentioned by his enemies to discredit his legitimacy. I'm not quite sure how to phrase this in a way that doesn't reek of original research or peacock language.
  • "technically jihad is still a foreign term meriting italics per MoS. But it is very commonly understood as a repercussion of Islamic terrorism, and I think it would be better to not italicize it. Minimal change to text is desirable in terms of readability, but maybe a link would suffice for those unfamiliar." -- I am quoting Trimingham in this section, & IIRC he italicizes the word. Unless you think I should suppress all italics in this quotation.
  • "I know photos of long-dead Ethiopian rulers a not exactly a dime a dozen, but some kind of image, even in the body, would be nice" -- I know of an image at the RoyalArk website (which is one of the external links), but I don't want to add it into the page until I understand whether it is PD or Fair Use. Unless you think it is worth the hassle of dealing with the "Free image" types & their bots.
If you don't feel you can answer these questions, a pointer to the best place to ask would be great. Thanks in advance. -- llywrch (talk) 23:37, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Wiki winos and GA segment in the newsletter

Thanks again for volunteering to help the Wine Project identify GA candidates. I was wondering if you would be interested in participating in the Wiki-Winos segment for an upcoming edition of the Wine Project Newsletter. (I'd probably post a new one next Monday-Tuesday). If you are interested, take a look at the interview questions and answer any that you would like. Just post your replies on the answer page. It would also be pretty neat to run a continuous segment in the newsletter with updates on the progress on the GA front in regards to wine articles. Would you be interested in helping with that? AgneCheese/Wine 02:27, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the prompt reply. I'd like to do the next newsletter sometime next week. The GA segment will probably be the main focus for the entire newsletter so I'm content to wait till you've finished your preliminary analysis before publishing. When you have your write done just posted it to Wikipedia:WikiProject Wine/Newsletter/Sub-projects page and I'll cut n paste it in its entirety to the Newsletter. Megalodon

Hello VanTucky! The entire content of the Megalodon article have been further refined and improved by me now and I have resolved many issues (including most of those that were pointed out by an another member in the talkpage of the article) and have posted a brief summary of the changes. Additionally! I have used several new sources (including some books) for citation of many points in the main article. So far, no more opinions have been posted in the talk page, which probably indicates that the article is in much better condition now. But the important thing is that your verdict on the current status (latest revision) of this article would be welcomed.

Peppin Merino

Hi, I noticed that you have moved the above article to Peppin Merino. Given that it is unlikely ever to need disambiguation, this seems a little strange to me although I am sure there is a good reason. The edit summary mentions a standard naming convention. Would you mind pointing me to it when you get a chance. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 13:31, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Fair enough, I guess I need to remember that in other parts of the world "merino" isn't a virtual synonym for "sheep". Thanks, Mattinbgn\talk 21:12, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Last notes on Lagaan review

Hi there, firstly, thanks for the assessment. I really appreciate you taking out time in doing so.

I did my might by reviewing Alien vs. Predator (film) earlier today. Since, this was my first GA review, I was not sure if I got it right completely. It would really be great if you can spare a little while in having a cursory glance my my GA assessment. Many thanks and regards, Mspraveen (talk) 15:20, 19 January 2008 (UTC)

Many thanks for your quick reply on my review! I've placed the nominee template on the article's talk page now.
I want to ask another quick question. I was reading on the Good Article criteria the other day. It said something about what is not a good article: "Articles that appear to meet the featured article criteria should be listed at peer review and featured article candidates instead of good article nominations." Just when I began thinking of improving Lagaan a bit further and put it for FA nomination, I realized the above. Can you help me clarify my thoughts, time permitting? Regards, Mspraveen (talk) 05:30, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
) Thanks much! Relieving to know. I was planning to add details on the Oscar nomination and merchandise for the film so that the article increases in breadth. I hope to improve it and then put it up for an FA case. Thanks again. Regards, Mspraveen (talk) 05:56, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Domestic sheep

I thought it was a bit misleading - it listed several types of alternate medicine by name, then said there was evidence for several treatments - which implies thatthe treatments listed were the ones there were evidence for, but I don't think that's actually the case. Vanished user talk 04:33, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Then, frankly, the source is cherry-picking from the scientific literature. Vanished user talk 04:41, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
They haven't been proven in humans, and yet are being claimed proven for animals? Vanished user talk 07:06, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
More to the point, here's a 2006 cite from a high-quality journal saying homeopathy is unproven in animals: [1] Vanished user talk 07:12, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Unproven per clinical standards and ineffective for sheep producers are two different things. There are entire homeopathic manuals for livestock, and multiple reliable sources verify that a minority of sheep producers use such methods. That's what the sources say. I don't know what your little crusade to remove all mention of alt medicine is about, but it doesn't fly when there are sources literally right in front of me that contradict you. VanTucky 07:16, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
I put in a compromised wording. See if you can live with it. ScienceApologist (talk) 07:39, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
Looks fine to me - I just objct to saying that things definitely do work when the science doesn't justify this. Vanished user talk 08:37, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

Battlefield Earth (film)

A lot of work has been done recently on Battlefield Earth (film), and we were wondering if perhaps you could drop by Talk:Battlefield Earth (film) and do a quickie Wikipedia:Good article reassessment for us? Thanks for your time, Cirt (talk) 22:05, 20 January 2008 (UTC).

  • Will you have a chance to help us out and do a reassessment of the article's GA status for us? Cirt (talk) 22:50, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
    • Yes, please, that's exactly what I meant, as if you were doing a sweep on it. Cirt (talk) 02:50, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
      • Thanks so much, we'll start responding to the points you brought up. Cirt (talk) 03:12, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Domestic Sheep reference

How weird. I just checked and it looked OK to me - it's reference #25 Endangered species update July/August 2001 p. 96 which should go to [2]- p. 96 has the reference. It's weird because I was looking at a page by Wildlife Defenders but they obviously have a POV and the u.mich.edu link seemed a better source. Maybe refresh your page and try again?Bob98133 (talk) 04:00, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

RFA

VanTucky/Archive 12, Thank you for your support in my RFA which passed 43/0/1. I would like to especially thank Bibliomaniac15 for being my nominator and admin coach. I would also like to thank Rudget for being my co-nominator. I'm sure that I can live up to the community's expectations as an administrator, and not totally mess everything up. Thanks again for your support! Malinaccier (talk) 17:15, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

a thank you note

Thanks for participating in my RfA!
Although it failed 43/27/0, I'm happy because the outcome has been very helpful in many meaningful ways. Your support and remarks contributed so much to this. If you followed my RfA you know what happened. Most of the editors who posted opposing opinions have never edited with me. Some articles I edit deal with controversial topics and with respect to a very few of these, editors who didn't know much about me had some worries about confrontational editing and civility. Since I support their high standards I can easily (and will gladly) address this. The support and ecouragement to run again soon has been wonderful, thanks again. Cheers! Wine Newsletter/GA stuff

Hey Van Tucky, is there any update for the GA stuff that I can incorporate into the Wine Newsletter. I'd like to get it out sometime on Wednesday. We don't really need a full evaluation of all our B articles for this first edition but some write up about the Top 3 closest articles to GA status and maybe the bottom 3 would be fine. Actually something that would be really great is for you to share your thoughts on what should be a "B-class" wine article. Whenever I go through the category, I'm amazed at the disparity at what we call "B-class". I always thought that B class should be "really close" to GA with only needing some polishing-(Kinda like the assessment scale example of Jammu and Kashmir). Just let me know when you get around to that. Thanks again for your help. AgneCheese/Wine 14:55, 28 January 2008 (UTC)

I'm gonna bother you again

How would I report a vandal? Basketballone10 00:00, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! Basketballone10 00:08, 29 January 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, but my adopter went on a four-day skiing trip, so I've got to bother you once more. On my page, I have a vandal counter. How do I put it in the "Welcome!" filefolder I have (correctly, and without messing up everything)? Basketballone10 03:28, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
On my user page, at the top, you'll notice a white vandal counter with red letters. I also have a section named "Welcome!" I want to know how to put the vandal counter in the section correctly, as you'll notice, I've got filefolders. I've experimented once, but I threw every thing out of wack. Seeing as my adopter is on a vacation, I couldn't ask him. Basketballone10 22:35, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

WikiAfterDark

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article WikiAfterDark, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of WikiAfterDark. AfD nomination of WikiAfterDark

An editor has nominated WikiAfterDark, an article on which you have worked or that you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/WikiAfterDark and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 04:14, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Thanks and photo chat in general

Hey, Sometimes I am snarky at you for things, so this time I wanted to say THANK YOU for finding that nice image of the Faroe pony, you are very good at finding this stuff, I can enter search terms in commons and come up with zilch (though I am also on a dialup at home, so images are s-l-o-w to load) And thanks too for fixing the commons link. You are A CHAMP on this one! By the way, many of the obscure horse breed articles have no images at all, it's been a PITA to find some, I suspect German and some of the other foreign language wikipedias may be hiding a few, but other than "Pferde" my knowledge of German horse words is close to zero. The horse breeds tagged for photos are with the dogs at Category:Wikipedia requested breed photographs.

By the way, there's an argument to be made for finding a different Shetland pony photo, as the one there is a bit dwarfish in the legs, (The one you found was quite poorly conformed, and the grooming thing isn't an issue; really, all animals spend most of their time in "ungroomed casual mutt" state, but when we show the ideal or standard in an artcle, just like with dogs, we like a photo of the animal properly groomed for public view) Problem is, the ungroomed fuzzballs irritate the afficionados and started the last big edit war over there, BUT the nicely groomed American Shetlands (of which there are several photos in commons, including the cute one with the three year old kid) are considered too refined and leggy to make the European breeders happy (horse politics are a pain), and most of the photos of "normal" shetlands (like the girl in the cart) are distorted or otherwise not great photos. (**whining**) The breed standard that I think would be non-controversial if there was a GOOD image, is basically a well-groomed and well-conformed version of the "foundation" shetland like the one in the drawing, something not too stumpy in the legs (which seems to be the flaw in the European ponies, the "sausage with legs" look) but also not too skinny (the over refined stuff with crooked legs is the Americans' problem), sort of like this copyrighted image (which would be perfect except for the photoshopping out of the background, sigh) this bunch would probably work too, especially that cute little jumper. Anyway, should you find anything, can you toss it up on the talk page over there for a look-see? Sorry to go on and on, just wish there were more free images to choose from and that I had a faster internet connection. Anyhow, this is a long way of saying thanks and that I DO appreciate your ability to find images. Montanabw(talk) 06:39, 30 January 2008 (UTC)
