The Vancouver Canucks are a professional National Hockey League (NHL) ice hockey team based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The team has had 6 of its players admitted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, as well as 5 other 'builders'. The home arena for the Canucks is GM Place.

It first began in 1945 in the Pacific Coast Hockey League and won their first PCHL championship in their first year (1946). Then in 1952 the PCHL merged with the Western Canada Senior Hockey League to form the Western Hockey League. In 1970 the Canucks came under new ownership and finally joined the NHL.

They joined the NHL in 1970 along with the Buffalo Sabres. The Canucks play their home games in GM Place. They play in the Northwest Division of the Western Conference. Interestingly enough, Roger Neilson, the coach of the Canucks in 1983 started the white towel trend in hockey.

In 1994 the Canucks made it to the Stanley Cup finals for the second time in franchise history. Defeating the Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars, and the Toronto Maple Leafs in the semi-finals they played the New York Rangers for the championship. Losing in Game Seven, 3-2, followed what became known as the 1994 Stanley Cup riot in downtown Vancouver. (read more)
