Valse Triste is a ballet made by Peter Martins, New York City Ballet's balletmaster in chief, to Jean Sibelius' eponymous waltz as well as his incidental music for a play written by Sibelius' brother-in-law and variously titled Scene with Cranes and Kuolema (Death), the crane being a symbol of death in Finnish literature. [1] [2] The premiere took place May 23, 1985, at the New York State Theater, Lincoln Center, with original lighting by Ronald Bates; lighting is now by Mark Stanley.
