Vallum (Hadrian's Wall)

"The vallum" was a component of Hadrian's Wall, consisting of a large earthwork and ditch, built parallel with the Wall on the Wall's southern side. It is named after vallum, which is a term used more generally to describe any Roman defensive ditch anywhere in the empire.
