Valley Regional High School (VRHS) is located in Deep River, Connecticut, United States. It serves all three towns of Regional School District #4: Essex, Chester, and Deep River.

[edit] Administration

Since 2006, the school has had both an interim principal (Mr. Donald Gates) and interim vice principal (Mr. Michael Sidoti). The latter resigned in March of 2008 due to an "illness" and Tracy Whaples took over the responsibilities of Associate Principal for the remainder of the year. The district has recently hired Ian Neviaser of Essex to begin as of July 1, 2008.

[edit] Scholastics

Valley Regional offers the students a variety of classes on diverse subjects. There are numerous classes given under the category of all required fields along with many other electives that have been added over the years. VRHS also gives the students the option to take Advanced Placement classes if they have met the prerequisites. These include AP Biology, AP U.S. History, AP English, and AP Chemistry along with a few others.

VRHS is a part of the Shoreline Conference of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC). The school's varsity sports consist of soccer, cross country, football, volleyball, cheerleading, field hockey, indoor track, basketball, gymnastics, swimming, track, lacrosse, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, and high school bowl. VRHS combines students with Lyme-Old Lyme High School for both the football team and the school's crew club.

Soccer

Both the boys and girls soccer teams have received moderate success over recent years. Several shoreline championships were won during the late 1990s and early 2000s but none since.

Cross Country

The XC teams at VRHS in its history has been very successful. Throughout the 1970s, the teams won both the Shoreline and State tournaments several years in a row.

Football

The VRHS/LOL football team has been less than successful in recent years probably due to the competition that they face such as the powerhouses Hyde and Cromwell. However, the team stays optimistic about each season; when asked about their 2008 season coming up next fall, one of the players said, "We should be ok next year."

Volleyball

Cheerleading

Valley's cheerleaders are in season throughout the fall and winter rooting in the football team and basketball teams.

Field Hockey

Indoor and Outdoor Track

VRHS' track teams have been one of the more dominating sports that the school has. Members of the team have won Shoreline and State titles along with competing in Connecticut's State Open tournament as well as the New England Regional tournament.

Basketball

Boys basketball in the early 2000s was a pretty strong force in the Shoreline however is coming off of a 1 win 2007-2008 season and is looking to do much better next year. The girls had a better 2007-2008 season than the boys but failed to make the state tournament.

Gymnastics

The gymnastics team is made up of 4 girls, just enough to compete. Gymnastics is another sport that has been very successful in recent years; they were runners-up in the 2008 state tournament.

Swimming

Swimming is not the most popular sport in the school consisting of less than 5 girls a year but does alright competitively.

Lacrosse

Lacrosse is the newest varsity sport at Valley and has been very popular among the student body. This year, in only its second varsity season, the boys team made it to the state tournament but lost in the first round.

Baseball/Softball

Golf

The golf team has been successful as of late making the state tournaments frequently and being competitive in it.

Tennis

Both the boys and girls tennis teams have done very well for themselves as of late. The girls have both singles and doubles winners in the Shoreline and State tournaments along with the boys team.

High School Bowl

HSB is the school's trivia team and they have done very well reaching the finals of the season on numerous occasions.
