[edit] Biography
Valerij Nikolaevskij was born in Moscow on the "Krasnaya Presna". By age fifteen he had begun working for the Communist party in Altai and Siberia. Later he held other jobs, including construction and a position with the Russian civil fleet. Nikolaevskij also became leader of a young Communist group in Chukotka. However, because of his criticisms of the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, he was banished from the group.
Later he became the director of the theater, literature union and the "club of creative intelligence" in Tolyatti, Russia. In 1987, he became the head of the new historical literary center House of Repin (Дом Репина), on the Volga.
Nikolaevskij went on to write important historical works about the early Russian Empire and about Ancient Rome. His Russian novel Me, Sinner, with the Words of Truth was censored in Russia for more than 22 years. During Mikhail Gorbachev's administration it was finally published, but subsequently went out-of-print after his resignation. His book The Secrets of Kremlin - from the Secret Archives of the KGB remains unpublished in Russia due to political pressure.
After the fall of the Soviet Union he fled to Israel, and later moved to Austria. He remained in Vienna after undergoing heart surgery; he currently resides there.
